As of right now, I am good on space. I have some room on my window sill on the other side behind my bed that I can fit some IF I get any more. I have 42 total plants so I really don't NEED any more... I am trying to stay pretty cheap to be honest. Less than $50 but I don't want something so cheaply made that it won't last me a month. I have been looking at something like this bulb in this lamp to clip onto my bed to get pointed at each window or even onto a cat tree, which I moved out of the way for the sake of the photo but I usually keep to the left of my nightstand. I don't know about the LED lightbulb but I also know that succs prefer blue light but I read that fluorescent light is ideal for a cheap, quality lighting setup. While I know that LEDs aren't cheaper than fluorescent, do they work as well? I honestly know little to nothing about plant lighting, sorry for the essay!

Edit: Looked at the Overwinter Megathread and someone posted that their Succs loved this bulb so I might just get 2 these if they are tried and true. I also might just end up getting a real, hard setup with shelves, lighting, the mix. It might be my best option at this time.

C&S is just an abbreviation for cactus and succulent. I don't really know of any brands that are better than most, except I try to stay away from Miracle Grow products like I said in someone else's thread below. Give me a bit and I'll check Amazon to see what sells up there and I'll edit.

Edit: So you can probably/definitely find this somewhere else for a better price somewhere else, but I have had a good luck with this (https://www.amazon.ca/Good-Earth-Horticult-Inc-10404/dp/B006MY5KJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469739351&sr=8-1&keywords=succulent+soil) and perlite (I actually use Miracle Grow perlite that is ~$4/per 4 qt bag). Don't buy stuff with fertilizer already in it. It is usually in bad proportions. I'd just buy these from a big box store. Do you have a Home Depot or Lowes? They should be like $5/bag at either of those kind of stores. Use a plastic solo cup to portion out the two and mix it together in a Tupperware bin or something. That's what I usually do. And then I leave the extra closed in the bin in my garage. Finding stuff for a good mix is kind of challenging and it doesn't ever come to any of us right away, ever. I can promise you that!

u/Christianckc · 2 pointsr/succulents

That sounds like a good plan. If you want to order something from Amazon I would suggest the cactus and succulent mix. That stuff is amazing. I add some more pumice to the mix just for extra drainage Also I really enjoy putting a thin layer of lava rock for the top soil. It gives it that desert look haha. But yeah I'd water it maybe once every 2-3 weeks.
Sorry I got excited haha if you want to get really crazy you can use some cactus juice.

I've been browsing the grow light thread and thinking about getting more succulents before winter, and would like some input on which setup seems better or if you would recommend something else entirely. This adjustable growlight which has a gooseneck and clip (also comes with option for timer) or this bulb and this clamp light? I currently don't have many succulents at all (which obviously can change) so I don't need the light to cover a huge area. Should I set up a specific area to do this with shelving etc (please recommend if so) or is on top of a cedar chest on trays fine?

I'm pretty new to this and appreciate any advice I can get here.

u/nottambula · 4 pointsr/succulents

Hello! As another succ-loving college student, I invested in a couple of grow lights for my friends. I have this one and this one on roughly 9-10 plants. No etiolation, stress coloring, and they don't get hot to the touch (slightly warm, but that is to be expected).

I leave them on anywhere from 12-16 hours a day and my plants love them! The're a very vivid purple, fair warning. Alternatively, there is the grow light/winter thread that might be helpful to you. =)

u/FiainTheCorgi · 2 pointsr/succulents

Another question - this one about grow lights. It gets pretty cloudy here, sometimes for weeks at a time, and I figure I would rather prep and make sure my new plants are getting enough light now so when winter comes it won't be an issue (Illinois does not get much sunlight then). My windowsills are small, though, so I'd like to set up a rack in the corner of the kitchen with lights and expand a bit. It won't be a huge area though.

I found these two grow lights and I'm not sure if one would be significantly better? The flexible one would be nice and more space efficient for me but would getting the bulb and a cheap desk lamp be better for the plants?

u/emilyness9 · 1 pointr/succulents

I'm not really sure what you have in it, so its hard to tell by looking LOL. My favorite mix, which I've seen the best results, including pots without drainage holes (I get a lot of requests for terrarium arrangements), is an equal mix of:

  1. Pumice
  2. Charcoal
  3. Cactus Soil
  4. Perlite

The grittier, the better!! I don't like sand because I feel like (unless its coarse sand) the sand just soaks up water, instead of draining quickly.
u/meeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 13 pointsr/succulents

Aww how cute! Here is the link to the pots for anyone interested! I have them and they are great little pots 😊

If your plants are in a bright south-facing window then they probably won't need a grow light. But it also depends what kind of planst you have. Here's the cheap light I use from amazon. It does the job because I only really need it for one plant but I honestly wouldn't recommend it. If you search in the succulent search bar there are a ton of good threads and grow light recommendations :)

u/NuclearHubris · 1 pointr/succulents

I can answer this one! I have an awful situation where I live in the best place ever for succulents - Southern California - with tons of sun and absolutely none of it hits any of my windows. So I bought this bulb and this grow light and I have five happy babies that are growing on my desk with no natural light. The grow light on it's own wasn't enough, but the light+bulb have been working great and all of my succulents are growing again.

u/arborealchick12 · 1 pointr/succulents

The succulents under the cheapo gooseneck lights are etiolating slightly but not horribly, but those plants also get some filtered afternoon sun next to a window. I recently bought this Sunblaster 904296 NanoTech T5 High Output Fixture Reflector Combo, 2-Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKKUBDQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4naQDbKMJ1YZ4 I'm am confident it will work better, but I just received it and haven't taken it out of the box yet.

My sansii bulb works well, but I'm not using it for sun-hungry succulents. I have my pineapple plants, Sansevieria and some other medium light succulents under it.

u/1foryes2forno · 1 pointr/succulents

Yeah, those are definitely easier to find & less expensive. My current lights are hanging from one of these stands, though, and I would have to figure out how to make those shop lights work with that setup. I dunno if I'm that creative lol

u/2_greenthumbs · 1 pointr/succulents

I have this light hanging from a shelf that I use for growing basil indoors: ACKE LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants,Plant Light for Grow Light Stand,DIY Indoor Growing Light Panel for Germination,Seedling,Vegetative Growth and Flowering

https://www.amazon.com/ACKE-Germination-Seedling-Vegetative-Flowering/dp/B07GGX3R9T

You can configure it lengthwise instead of how it’s shown in the picture. And I think you can connect two set together, but don’t know that for sure.

It’s a warm white light which is accomplished by having white and red LEDs

u/Katya_Succulents · 2 pointsr/succulents

If your succulents are stretching, I highly recommend getting a lamp. I used desk lamps for supplemental lighting at first, and they work great for if you have only a few succulents. Just remember that the light needs to be 8-12 inches away from the plant and that will help you to see how many plants it can cover.

Once the desk lamp wasnt cutting it for me, I used these LED lights. They are purple, which a lot of people dont like, but they've given me gorgeous blushing on all my plants.

This is the one I use cuz I'm a cheapskate. Full spectrum is a lot better for actual viewing/ photography tho. I think it's about 6 inches from the plants and on for about 12-14 hours. I would check out the overwinter megathread under the about tab for r/succulents for grow light into tho. They are way more helpful :)

u/Fabled-Sparrow · 1 pointr/succulents

True yes! I just get these pots bc their cheap and easy to store. i use cactus soil i got off Amazon, i repotted this guy when i first got him because he was in a TINY pot and was super thirsty. I use this soil! Growth Technology Ltd MDCAF2 Cactus Focus Repotting Mix 2 Litre https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007797622/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LBb4CbY7GEQP6

Edit; i cant get what you linked me bc im in uk but ill keep an eye out for them! I use miracle grow indoor plant food tho

u/barinthus0 · 1 pointr/succulents

If you plan to keep your succulents alive, ever, just buy some succulent/cactus potting soil. Succulents need quick draining soil so that the plants roots don't stay wet for too long and begin to rot. I tend to use this and just procure it from my nearby garden store for way cheaper then Amazon sells it for.

And if you aren't using a pot with holes in the bottom.. get one, use it, love it. It makes a world of difference in the survivability of your plants.

And Perlite is a often found in quick draining succulent soil mixes. It absorbs water very well.

u/octopushug · 2 pointsr/succulents

Are you shipping your items or driving them over? If you are shipping, I'd suggest unpotting the plants and letting them dry out bare root completely, then lightly wrap each plant in protective padding (tissue paper, toilet paper, cotton fiber fill all work well here) before packing them into more padding material to avoid shaking them around too much in the package.

You can also use a similar packing method if you're driving, which might protect them better than trying to pack them while they're potted. Otherwise, I'd say lots of protective padding and something to keep the pots all stable is the way to go.

You will probably need grow lights if you plan on a fully indoor setup depending on your windows/natural sun levels. I have all of my succulents on a rack with a T5 6500K grow lit setup controlled by an automatic timer. Hydrofarm Agrobrites are excellent quality. Durolex are also popular but my experience with them is that they are lower quality--the fixture runs hotter and the default bulbs that come with them burn out way faster. Amazon Basic shelves are also useful depending on what size you need, or any other similar shelving system.

u/sidewalksolipsis · 1 pointr/succulents

Amazon! Here you go! Glad to enable another succulent addict. :) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GGMG5KY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (It looks like they're out of the large version at the moment. )

u/mithracula · 2 pointsr/succulents

Sorry, I don’t know much about the strips and shelves - though I do use some on my reef tank macroalgae reactor (clear tube with led strips wrapped around) seems to work well and puts up with occasional salt water with out electrocuting me or fish. I don’t know how to fix them onto shelves tho.

I use these one on my plant shelves and added one of these just so it wasn’t bright red. You can see my shelves in my last post. They’re super low profile. But my shelves are wire mesh which allowed me to easily tie them to the underside.

u/InksPenandPaper · 2 pointsr/succulents

Take them home and place a growing light on them during winter. If you have your own office or are the last one to leave, set a growing light on them for the night.

This is the one I use. It has 5 brightness settings and 3 timer modes.

Good luck.

u/coinboy1998 · 2 pointsr/succulents

I also keep some succulents at work and I bought this lamp from Amazon. It clips onto my desk and is pretty powerful. I've noticed a big difference in their growth rate!

u/redle6635 · 1 pointr/succulents

I just bought this based off of another redditors opinion.

u/floppykitty · 3 pointsr/succulents

Do succulents like small pots? As in pots with not much room except for the plant it self. I see a lot of cute pots on amazon and I wonder if these are just for cuteness rather than the health of a succulent. I linked an example. tiny pots

u/tangerine264 · 3 pointsr/succulents

These are the lights I️ use.
This is the light that I️ like best. $30 from Amazon. It doesn’t put off very much heat.
This is the one that is not so good. $25 from Amazon.

u/eclecticnymph · 2 pointsr/succulents

I’d get a small grow light until it gets warm enough to put them on the windowsill. You can get small ones for pretty cheap! This is very similar to the ones I have :) If you put all your plants close together, one like this would work well.

u/Oskerino · 5 pointsr/succulents

QWORK 5 Pcs Set (6, 6, 8, 10,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0751893Y2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I just got these yesterday. I’ve only tested them on one planter, but they went through it nice and clean.

u/AskMeAboutMyThing · 1 pointr/succulents

Also do not expect to propagate any leaves you got from these plants. It may happen, but it is unlikely. I have tried many times to propagate leave from unhealthy plants, but they never work.

Once the plants get established again, and especially if you supplement them with some cactus food like this, then you can start trying to propagate their strong healthy leaves. But be patient for now. No supplements or water yet. Just let them sit for a while, either out or in dry soil. It takes time, but it is very rewarding to have a little friend that you brought back from the brink of death.

u/4chun · 1 pointr/succulents

If she has a lot of little succs and is in need of pots for them, I highly recommend this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01E5ERKA4/ref=mp_s_a_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1519857242&sr=8-31&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=succulent+planter. I have a few dozen of them and love them

u/organelle · 8 pointsr/succulents

I totally get it. When I had less budget I bought regular old clip lights and a couple of really high lumen bulbs, just enough for a couple of plants (more if you have only small plants, which is mostly what my collection consists of now.) Here's my old setup, you can just see the clip and how close I put super needy plants. Used
this light.
Just bought these at a recommendation from ewwmayo on gardenweb, wonderful so far. If your semps are still alive you can try putting them out now, more likely to survive in cold than no light.

u/MetaJess · 2 pointsr/succulents

Im in the US, but I bought the 2' version of this as my first grow light and so far so good https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T0CPI6A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_x7bbzbMVPDGYX

Make sure whatever light you buy goes to 6500k light temp, that is the same brightness as regular sunlight. I also suggest investing in a timer for the light of you don't already have one!

u/floralcode · 1 pointr/succulents

I'm sorry, I have no answer, just want to tack on and ask if LED strips like these are recommended as a cheap solution. My ceilings seem like they're too high for most of the hanging grow lights I see on amazon and the strips look so cool.

u/book_worm200414 · 2 pointsr/succulents

Light

This is what I use :) This one is better than the t8 fixtures I have and it has light stressed all the succulents under it :)

u/sarowen · 13 pointsr/succulents

u/loganwadams · 9 pointsr/succulents

Gladly! These are the lights that I bought. Just saw that they are 50% of the price at which I paid for them back in December. I HIGHLY recommend them.

u/stonedarcher · 2 pointsr/succulents

Maybe try something like this or this or this!! :)

u/dereanry · 1 pointr/succulents

I live in Michigan and even if I leave my succulents by a window during the winter, they stretch out and get kind of long and sparse. Last winter I got a UV light off amazon and it worked great! I just left it on overnight maybe twice a week. Mine is kind of like this

u/breedabee · 2 pointsr/succulents

Not OP but I use this one. Heres a before and after after of a home Depot succulent I have had under it for ~1 month. No colour changes IRL, but the succulent is growing in tighter.

PS. If someone has a sneaky ID I would appreciate it :)

u/te-fod · 8 pointsr/succulents

Thanks for your input, I’ll take them out and repot them, I’ll find some moss like you said to put inside, I hadn’t seen the idea with a cactus before and I guess this is why

What is the issue with the soil I’m using as it’s supposed to be for cacti and succulents this is the soil I’m using

u/PostFPV · 1 pointr/succulents

I don't have the box anymore but I'm fairly confident this is close to what I have.

u/FaeLLe · 1 pointr/succulents

The person who sold it to me said to not water them till February end or March. It will be repotted in some nice mix that has worked for my pony tail palm and dracaenas - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cactus-Focus-Repotting-Mix-Litre/dp/B007797622

They just do not clump together even when watered so I think it is okay, I can even mix some perlite in if you recommend. The grit is very minuscule too (maybe 1-2 mm max).

How will I recognise signs of lack of sunlight? Since the species I have do not grow too tall how will they elongate?

Thanks. That's quite a good price for a 2ft fixture. I'm always jealous of the prices and selection offered in the US compared to what we get here in Canada. We're basically limited to paying 2-3x as much for what's basically the same thing.

I just bought two of those after having the 15w version for a while now. The 15 watt one is enough for most of my plants but it doesnt quite bring out the nice colors of most of them and my e. prolifica is still etiolating like crazy. The 45watt one will be enough though I think.

Looks like your standard T5HO grow light and reflector combo to me. Perhaps a Sunblaster T5HO?

Sunblaster tend to be slightly more pricey than other manufacturers so you can probably bag a cheaper bargain if you look for other T5HO grow lights online. You can also get different setups i.e. from single tube with a reflector right up to significantly larger 8 tube combos.

u/pizzzaing · 1 pointr/succulents

I'm in NY and today I just noticed that my plants are seeeriously stretching. I rushed and bought this grow light. I think the supplemental artificial light will be enough!

Now I'm going to behead a bunch of my succs and give them to a friend who just started up her garden!

u/MockingBird421 · 1 pointr/succulents

Alright, thank you!

Regarding the second, I got it a few weeks ago, but it had clearly been shedding leaves before I bought it. How do you know it didn't have enough light?

Regarding light, since it appears all of my plants are on the verge from dieing due to lack of sunlight, I apparently need to buy a grow light. Would this work, put over rows of these plants, and how many should be going over head plant and how many hours a day should they be on for?

u/KCosmo · 5 pointsr/succulents

You don't need to spend anywhere near that. Just look for some 6500k compact florescent bulbs and use any desk or clamp lamp. That should be fine for the amount of plants you have. Just keep it about 6 inches from them.

If you want to go bigger you could invest in an overhead T5 fixture like this and spend 70ish.

I have a pack sitting in my closet right now in case my leds end up not being enough and I notice signs of etiolation. You can fit in a desk lamp or a clamp lamp. I don’t know how bright they are though, haven’t plugged any in. But I’ve heard good reviews on here about them.

The overwinter thread has a lot of info.

I don't have a ton of grow light experience because I'm in socal and only use them temporarily if it rains for a few days. I use a few of these LED clamp lights because they're small, inexpensive, and easily moveable.

I will drill some holes then! Also, the rocks are just a very thin layer for decoration on top of the succulent specific soil I purchased, they are not glued together!

This is the soil I have them in currently.

These are from Amazon, the exact listing is "Desk Clip Plant Grow Light with 360° Flexible Gooseneck and Spring Clamp" and they can be found here. 7W full spectrum clip lights, they may be small but they pack a whallop! My California Sunset looooooooooooves these lamps!

I'm using one of those goose neck red/blue ones. I don't think it'd be strong enough on it's own but since I'm using it as supplement to natural sunlight just for the winter (my plants are in a south facing window) it's been sufficient for my plants.

Edit: this is the exact light I'm using but again, I wouldn't recommend this a sole light source. There were a couple weeks where I had to move my plants away from the window due to the temperature and the light alone was not sufficient on its own.

I got these lights and shelves in recently because Missouri is too wet and and the bugs have really had a go at my little fam. I've been meaning to get some for fall/winter so they don't get so leggy.

I fully expect to have to adjust the shelves for proper lighting, so I'm going to be doing some very careful observation each day.

I've never tried those cheap LEDs. But I do have two Agrobrite T5 lights that work well. They're a bit more but don't break the bank. Available in lots of lengths and bulbs.

Look at Agrobrite CFLs, they make higher watt ones. This one, for example.

And yeah, I don't trust most red/blue LEDs.. I think a lot of folks buy them for the price point and find later that their plants etiolate quite a bit.

Unless you are going to buy several, its not big enough for more than 1 or 2, much less your entire collection of 10-12.
If yours are larger plants, and/or you think you'll be getting more, I would make sure to get one thats larger. I started with a 2-bulb T5 setup, below, but moved to a 4-bulb LED encasement, using the stand from the first one to hang it.
Whatever you choose, there are inexpensive options out there, so don't feel like you have to pay for over-priced LEDs panels, unless of course you don't mind it.

Shelves and macrame hold my collection together. I got the shelf on Amazon here .

My window is east facing, so it gets decent light without roasting the leaves too badly. I have a shelf with a grow light right near the window as well, so I'm sure they get some ambient light from that.

About $50 on Amazon! It had some reviews that made me weary, but I have not had any issues.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T0CPI6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm relatively new to succulents and I'm looking for any feedback on my overwintering setup. I have limited space, so this is what I came up with..

The general opinion is to use a fertilizer which is lower in nitrogen, although which you use depends on you. I typically suggest Cactus Juice.

u/The_Hindmost · 2 pointsr/succulents

Cactus and succulent repotting mix combined with perlite for the soil, pot has a single drainage hole ~1 cm in diameter with a layer of plastic mesh over it to prevent too much soil loss.

I can't vouch for the long term quality of any of these products but I have these pink ones, and [these purple LED strips] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GDT048Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (mounted three on a bookshelf, but they each have chunky dc adapters, so they don't work well in multiples on one power strip, and they're not really bright enough individually to keep my succulents happy).

There are also more expensive LED panels with cooling fans which might extend the life of the diodes longer or something, but I was going for as cheap as possible, without resorting to non-LEDs.

Also another potential point of confusion is some sellers list the wattage equivalent of the bulbs if they were incandescent (brightness) while others list the actual electricity consumption.

I recently bought this and my plant is already getting more compact. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002JQBQZQ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title i tried full spectrum leds but the color on the succulent is not as great as their color temp is lower.

Been following this sub for a while, finally pulled the trigger on some plants. I ordered five succulents online in January, and they arrived in pretty bad condition. These are my first succulents, and I seem to be having trouble bringing two of them them back to life:

  • The vendor didn't send identification, but here are the photos. I took the first one in January when I repotted them, the rest were taken today.
  • Drainage: Large hole in the bottom of each pot.
  • Potting Medium
  • Water: I water when the soil is completely dry (maybe once every 8-9 days). I will give them a complete soak until water drains out of the base of the pot. I live in a semi-arid climate type, so it's typically very dry in my apartment. The average humidity is around 40%.
  • They sit by a west-facing window all day. Indirect sunlight during the morning, direct sunlight in the afternoon and evening.
  • History: Ordered online in January, and they were pretty banged up from shipping. I repotted them after about a week.
  • Rot: I've read through the entire wiki, and I still have no idea. The succulent in the blue pot has been shriveling up and losing leaves/stems consistently. It's down to just a few small leaves and I don't know what else I can do with it. There is no smell, and it's not squishy or gross, it just seems really dry. Could this one need more water than the others? The one in the green pot looks just as sad. It came in with black spots and shriveled leaves, but again, no smell or ooze. The stem on this one seems to be ok, but the leaves have been shriveling up and falling off since I got it.
