You might enjoy this book. It's about a mid-40's author who decides he wants to learn to surf, and not just surf as a beginner, but become advanced in one year. It's a good read and reminder for us all that it's never too late to start and being a beginner at something is good for your mind:

I started wearing them last year - aside from the long term protection against surfers ear, I find I feel warmer with them in. I'll even wear them in warm water no to prevent water in my ear, which is annoying.

There are a lot of expensive ones out there but the JBL ones on amazon (or some surf shops) work great and are like 1/4 the cost

This is the highest zinc oxide concentration I could find in a sunscreen. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I21JM7A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought it. Haven't used it yet but it has good reviews.

I also use retinoids, but topical, for acne. It's basically the same thing.

Headhunter is great but I found I still got red around my eyes, which is where your skin is the thinnest apparently.

What i've been doing lately is headhunter stick, then top it off with desitin diaper rash cream which is like 40% or something zinc oxide. Came out white as a ghost after a 3 hour session the other week.

I looked through Essential Surfing to get an idea of some of the boards that I wanted to try and make. Their glassing instructions seemed to be pretty good. The greenlight guide and swaylocks are also great resources.

Your first board won't be exactly what you have in mind. Mine ended up with WAY too much vee in the tail (5'10" flyer copy) and about 1/2 inch too thick all around. Still a blast to ride on crappy small days when it's closing out. As long as your outline is kinda symmetrical, you'll have a good time riding whatever it is.

Buy an indo board. They're super fun, totally dangerous (for the first few days, or with alcohol), and they definitely help your balance.

u/ItaloFontana · 1 pointr/surfing

Agreed, way too much. Just get an INDO BOARD, still not the cheapest thing but they are great.

u/greasy_fingers · 2 pointsr/surfing

This book is my resource for board info. It's a little dated, but explains dimensions well (rocker, bottom, rails, concave, etc). Also has some good ding repair guidelines.

I have an electric one that plugs into my ac adapter or can use batteries similar to this: ($39) https://www.amazon.com/Ivation-Portable-Outdoor-Battery-Powered/dp/B00IFHFJXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495650013&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=portable+shower&psc=1

I bought one of those big blue camping jugs and I fill it once every couple weeks. Works great for rinsing off my kids after a day at the beach too. I leave it in my car all the time and it's like a hot water shower.

u/4InchesOfury · 3 pointsr/surfing

Really, if you just want something that would tell you the time in the water I suggest a cheap/simple watch like this. $10 and it does a good job of telling time.

u/collias · 2 pointsr/surfing

Honestly, if you just need something to tell you the time, this watch will do fine.

I've had mine for a while and haven't had any issues with it. Plus, since it's only $10, if you lose it for some reason, who cares.

u/specialistdeluxe · 2 pointsr/surfing

Body Glide will prevent that. I use it every sesh on my neck and armpits. Also great for your nuts if you get chaffed from board shorts. A single stick of this stuff will last almost a year. At least it does for me and i surf 3-5 times a week.

It's not oily or anything like that. Little pricey but worth it not having a raw neck or balls.

u/KirklandBatteries · 1 pointr/surfing

This works for me. I’m always touching my face so I reapply when I can, but it stays on and helps with rashes. Made for baby butts too so works with sensitive skin

Kook - Peter Heller

Also, I second Breath. Probably my favorite book about surfing.

u/MulletWhip · 2 pointsr/surfing

I recently bought one of these portable showers, and i fill up a soft sided ice chest with warm water. The water seems to stay fairly warm when I get back to my truck after dawn patrol sessions

u/ltethe · 2 pointsr/surfing

I do. Years of El Porto have gradually made my ears sensitive. I would get slammed by a wall, and nearly every time I went under, it would hurt.

I use these

They stick in the ear pretty well, they stay in in just about everything except the gnarliest sets, and they equalize appropriately if you get pushed to the bottom.

Recently I surfed in Bali without these, and was pleasantly surprised that the pain I was experiencing has gone away after a few seasons of wearing these.

If you have crossbars with a square cross section on your car roof you could use something like this for your keys:

I back the foam roller/lacrosse ball recommendations, and some focused area yoga. Also look up some of Christopher Somers' Gymnastic Bodies programs, they have a lot of exercises for shoulder strength and mobility.

Another thing that might help you are deadhangs from a pull up bar. Dr. John Kirsch wrote a book about his studies treating shoulder pain, and as I understand it, the crux of it was that he found that doing consistent dead hangs (with the thumbs disengaged) helped alleviate a lot of the issues over time. I have rotator cuff syndrome in my left shoulder and doing the hangs has definitely been helping the pain from it https://www.amazon.com/Shoulder-Solution-Prevention-Revised-Expanded/dp/1589096428

was going to suggest just getting a rubber tip but they don't come with glue anymore?

Badger zinc sunscreen. Stuff is legit and I haven't been burned since I started using it.

Badger Sport Sunscreen Cream SPF 35, 2.9 Ounce (87ml) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J4F7W94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vWVhzbDNT3W2T

Waterproof key pouch, around my neck, tucked inside my wetsuit.

Here’s the one I use: Aquapac Waterproof Keymaster 608 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VQUUVW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

u/Hankest · 2 pointsr/surfing

The classic on understanding waves:
http://www.amazon.com/Waves-Beaches-Dynamics-Ocean-Surface/dp/0385148445

You can probably find it at a used book store, as it's been around for years.

u/Marcusnaut · 1 pointr/surfing

If you don't want the cod liver oil (Desitin) on your face you can use this stuff Rugby zinc oxide ointment usp

10$ for a pound of it. 20% zinc oxide.

Going from cold water to warm water is tough, and chafing will be your mortal enemy, especially if you're spending all day in the water for an extended period of time. Watch any part of you that is making contact with the board, indirect or direct.

I'd definitely wear something that is package-hugging underneath your board shorts. I've used compression shorts, others I know have done a speedo. This is close to necessary and you will almost certainly wreck your entire unit within a single long session if you don't.

Your chest and even your knee pits (if you're on a wide board) can also get wrecked more easily than you'd expect.

I wore a rashguard and also put this on every session in problem spots: http://www.amazon.com/BodyGlide-BGCB-Bodyglide-Original-Anti-Chafe/dp/B005L8YVRO

Also, you'll probably need to put your leash on tighter than you're used to, since you no longer have a wetsuit keeping you safe from it jiggling around.

People are sugggesting the cheap Casios which are fine, but I would avoid the F-91W because it has buttons which saltwater/sand can jam. I use this one instead.

Neoprene cement is the right way to go. Read and follow the instructions. A little tear like that in that are will repair well, low stress area. The trickiest part is holding the repair apart while the glue dries. I fold the suit over right at the tear and hold it that way with whatever object I have handy.

Beware, the glue is black in color and will stick to any porous surface it contacts, forever. Has the consistency of snot.
