Coming from a guy who bought a DS713+ for exactly this purpose -- get the DS416play. Nobody wants to buy a 3 year old 2-bay Synology when you're ready to upgrade.

Then start to use an off-site backup solution like Glacier or CrashPlan (which uses roughly 1GB of RAM per 1TB of backup which a DS416play can handle much easier than a j series). DSM6 has really solid support for Glacier and Crashplan can be had from the Synocommunity fairly painlessly.

You're going to outgrow the 2 drive capacity and will realistically only ever be able to put 6TB or 8TB in there until you hit your limit. This is especially true if you start using the DS416play as a media station (for SABnzbd, Couchpotato, etc). It's almost criminal not to if you're into downloading your media automatically on a low-power always-on NAS.

Get the DS416play and put your 4TB drives in there. When you're out of space there buy two 6TB/8TB drives and then replace your old 4TB's as you have the chance to.

No sense in restricting your RAID to RAID1. SHR with BTRFS is a really good solution and can take some failures (more so with a 4-bay drive).

Buy a UPS because ~$120 is worth not having to risk it. Get something like this APC 1500 (https://www.amazon.com/BR1500G-Back-UPS-1500VA-10-outlet-Uninterruptible/dp/B003Y24DEU). Costco has a 1500 Cyberpower (which OEM's APC) for ~$120).

/edit: clarifying everything to the DS416play model. It's much, much better.

u/agcastro · 2 pointsr/synology

DS218play does not support Btrfs, only the DS218+. See the full list here.

If you don't plan to use Plex or any server-side media center that uses transcoding, like a client-side Kodi or VLC, then even a DS218j will suffice. In this line of thought, consider also using a 4-bay unit; a DS418j with 4x4TB drives is much more affordable than your proposal and offers the tranquility of SHR/RAID 5.

Whatever your decision, you have to have an external backup for periodic synchronizations - and obvious data safety. A twin Synology NAS is the recommended solution; not cheap, though. But a quick-n-easy option is a USB-based HD because of its versatility, like a 12TB WD Elements.

Glad to know it worked. I was reading so many reviews stating that it doesn't support that much RAM (8 + 2GB)..

Will it take the HyperX 8GB 1866MHz DDR3L CL11 ? (link) in addition to the included 2GB ?

Thank you.

u/KiritoHero · 1 pointr/synology

You're welcome. You won't notice a difference in speed tbh.

Just be sure that the Stick is running at 1866MHz like the stock 2GB.

This one should also be working and is a little cheaper:

I actually never saw it for 600. Lust looked at my amazon order history — I bought it in jab 2018 for $529.99. Looking at the price history here it’s always user $550

https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B075N1Z9LT

The 1618 hovers about $730 https://camelcamelcamel.com/Synology-Bay-NAS-DiskStation-Diskless/product/B07CR8RZYY

So it’s 33 or 25 % difference depending how you look at it

I think what happens is because with synology the majority of the cost is fixed — distribution, software, services, and support — drastically improving hardware results in minor end user cost increase. Which makes low end, a tiny bit cheaper models disproportionally worse value compared to competition where hardware cost constitutes larger fraction of the price. Does it make sense?

u/not_my_userid · 1 pointr/synology

Thanks for the tips! Will check them out!

I also found this which seems a reasonable price:
APC Power-Saving Back-UPS PRO - BR550GI - Uninterruptible Power Supply 550VA (AVR, 6 Outlets IEC-C13, USB, Shutdown Software) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RL0CKI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_oR1JDbA4M775S

Think that would be ok?

Power loss can cause data loss if you're in the middle of a write to eight different drives. As far as the power conditioning goes, I don't really know. UPSes are pretty cheap compared to NASes (I have this one and it integrates very nicely with DSM) anyway. It's also nice to plug in your router, cable modem, etc, so you can have a few minutes to an hour of internet time if your power goes.

> 4 are outdoor and PoE using this switch:

Just a heads up for anyonelooking for this switch, this is a fast ethernet switch. That is, it only goes up to 100Mbps and not gigabit.

This may be important if you are looking for an all-in-one switch for your home network as well as your cameras.

There is a newer version of the above switch that supports PoE and gigabit:

Synology only allows 2 cameras for free, to add more you need to buy licenses from them. $200 for a 4 cam license pack at amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Camera-License-Pack-CLP4/dp/B001JD8J8W

u/mr_milo · 1 pointr/synology

Oops! I should have been more specific.... Amazon.com (USA) has them in stock for reasonable prices:

$599.99 for 2GB—http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMSGNCY/

$649.99 for 8GB—http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMZHLZU/

Mine shipped today. :)

It might depend on the NAS. I know my DS1515+ came with two camera licenses for Surveillance Station, and the camera packs are indeed a bit expensive. First, here's a bit of info about the packs, since some devices might eat up more than one: https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/Device_License_Pack

And it looks like about $59 a camera for the license packs beyond what your NAS might already provide: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Camera-License-Pack-CLP4/dp/B001JD8J8W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540961524&sr=8-1&keywords=surveillance+station+license&dpID=41bCVxXau5L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Factor in a few things long-term when looking at your alternatives. For some folks, a cloud solution makes more sense.

For me it wasn't really sensible relying on cloud offerings due to a combination of desired camera count, bandwidth requirements (busy/active scenes), and of course the subscription fees, when I already had capable hardware and storage. If I didn't already have/use the NAS for actual storage, then maybe I'd consider an online solution without always-on recording (it isn't really sensible doing that, and it's not really the norm anyway; record on activity detection). I have four of six licenses used at the moment and plan to add a couple more cameras later.

As for integrating what you have, the surveillance station stuff might be able to, but it'll deffo take a bit of research. See what the first link takes you to, for starters, I guess. Worst case I guess you can just make a share from the NAS that the existing NVR uses? Any reason you want to switch to using Surveillance Station to do the brain work?

Thanks I am going to order this one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QZ3UG0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nuvyDb5VKM0PK

It is on Synology’s website as tested by them.

u/brp · 3 pointsr/synology

If you can wait a week or two, I'd do that because Synology may be announcing some new NASs coming up. That's what I'm waiting for personally.

Barring that, at your budget and rate of expansion, I'd get a Synology 1815+ for $849 and then buy some extra RAM and add it in there for $30. BHPhotoVideo has the Synology available and no tax outside of NY. You don't have to get the official RAM from Synology, this one should work well.

Regarding RAID, it is supported to go from RAID-1 to RAID-5 and also RAID-5 to RAID-6. Stay away from the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), because there is no SHR -> SHR-2 or SHR -> RAID support.

Something with audio is priority for a nanny cam. I have my monitor setup on the crib only, so I don't use it's pan/tilt/zoom much at all. This one would work well though: http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI9831W-Megapixel-1280x960p-Wireless/dp/B00HVLDRAQ/ref=zg_bs_14241151_4

u/PaulReedSmith · 1 pointr/synology

I just now pulled the trigger on this Foscam.

It promises plug-n-play...on Monday I'll find out the specific degree to which they lied. ;)

I'll try to report back if I'm not in the hospital.

u/conradpoohs · 6 pointsr/synology

I picked up one of these for my DS1815+. It was the cheapest name-brand UPS I could find that had USB control. Synology control panel says that it has 6448 seconds worth of power, which is about 100x longer than it takes the Synology to shut down.

I also keep my cable modem and router on the UPS. This allows the Synology to send me notifications during a power outage.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/synology

Would that be something like this this?
Am keen to get a single 8, (making a total of 12) unless thats a bad idea for some reason.

u/jrmtz85 · 1 pointr/synology

Sata-USB

Got this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EK9LRLM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

actually, just ordered a second on Amazon for delivery tomorrow. At least I'll be able to check 2 drives across both laptops at the same time now.

u/bflaminio · 1 pointr/synology

I have an APC -- hasn't failed me yet. This one:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003Y24DEU/

u/Ellsass · 1 pointr/synology

Indeed Amazon how has them for reasonable prices:

2GB—http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMSGNCY/

8GB—http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMZHLZU/

Keep in mind that none of these stores seem to have them in stock until May 20. I wrote to SimplyNAS to confirm that.

Newegg also lists them via a third-party seller but the prices are $100 higher.

u/GilbertErik · 2 pointsr/synology

I'm not an expert, but could probably go with https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1600MHz-PC3-12800-KVR16LS11/dp/B00CQ35GYE to add 4 GB and bring it up to a total of 6 GB.

u/gmerideth · 4 pointsr/synology

According to a few measurements I took on a clients 1815+ with 8 drives I recorded 29W sleeping, 58W wake/idle and around 70W during a full load. To get an hour of runtime I threw this on it https://www.amazon.com/APC-Back-UPS-Battery-Protector-BR1000G/dp/B0038ZTZ3W and at load the APC shows about 66 minutes available. I got it for around $100. If you spent closer to your $200 you could get the 1500w one and get even more time.

u/wanze · 1 pointr/synology

Before recommending DS918+ for its expandablity, it's worth noting that you can basically buy a new DS918+ for the same price as the DX517.

The DX517 is ridiculously priced: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-5bay-Expansion-DX517-Diskless/dp/B06Y4J9GR8 $468-618.

DS918+: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-bay-DiskStation-DS918-Diskless/dp/B075N1Z9LT $550.

u/mad_vtak · 1 pointr/synology

I'll have a physical copy whenever i order a large external. (My volume is 12TB but currently only 6TB being used)

Other than drag and dropping, are there any other applications that can "clone" my volume?

u/keristos · 1 pointr/synology

The cables were installed less than a year ago by myself. I used this cable.

I am using this network switch, also purchased less than a year ago.

I doubt it's an issue of hardware...I'm most probably doing something wrong
