You might want to try opening the AppImage in the terminal instead to see what the output is, like ./program.AppImage.

Anyway, Tails comes with non-free firmware so that it works on as much hardware as possible out of the box. I always encourage people to use free (as in freedom) software when possible, but your Wi-Fi adapter will do fine.

Still, if you think you want to change your order, here is the adapter that I use and recommend. It is able to function with free software and firmware on nearly all modern GNU/Linux systems and comes with a small antenna too. (Mine also came with a USB extension cable, a nice touch.)

Tails can be pretty stupid with this one. If it doesn't detect a wifi transmitter, it will not show network or wifi options.

Tails never detected my ASUS usb-wifi dongle, and it took me hours to figure out the problem, the on-board help section kept referring me to the (infuriatingly) non-existent wifi settings.

Your best bet is to use a cheap usb wifi dongle to get connectivity. I tried this one and can confirm it will work with tails, plug and play. Totally solved my issues. Good luck!

I use the following TP-Link adapter. On amzon its $12.99, however I bought it locally under $`10. Best idea to buy from a local shop with cash rather than credit card. This will help you by not having any trail of purhasing the device if things go wrong with your Tails use.

I am using it with Mac and it's working good. The only drawback is it's Wifi-N not AC.

Tails 2.3 successfully boots from a 7-year-old Verbatim 4x DVD+RW on my iMac.

After I manually install Tails 2.3 ISO on a SanDisk Cruzer 16 GB SDCZ36-016G stick (did not have the deal-killer Windows 8 Certification on the packaging), Tails successfully starts from the USB stick, but, of course, Tails ▸ Applications ▸ Persistence is not available because the Tails Installer did not do the installation.

After Tails installer does the installation, Tails fails to boot successfully from the same USB stick — Boot Tails menu does not appear, keyboard and mouse don't work, and screen goes black.

Note: after I used the free open source Mac Linux USB Loader utility application to install debian-live-8.4.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso on the same USB stick, Debian-live successfully starts from the USB stick.

In my case, the culprit seems to be some sort of bug in the Tails Installer v2 utility application itself that is writing erroneous or incorrect configuration settings to the USB stick, which causes Tails to fail to start successfully from the USB stick.

I think often times it is best to use a usb wifi dongle. Because tails os might not support your wifi card. I have heard this one works well:

I think it's only some of the Sandisks cruzers that have that problem. My current Tails drive is one of these and it works perfectly.

I do advise people to stay away from the cruzers in general though - I think it's just luck that I picked one that works.

I don't know if this is the best one, but it seems to work well with Tails.

I have a couple of them.

I bought this one and it works great. Have had zero issues in over 6 months and multiple Tails upgrades.

u/EsquireSupreme · 3 pointsr/tails

I picked up a few of these and they are working awesome with persistence enabled.

Hey thanks for the reply,

I am using this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-150Mbps-Raspberry-Supports/dp/B003MTTJOY

Should work fine as it claims to be compatible.

u/corpionS · 1 pointr/tails

Use this, it's small and very good.

This is the line I am using. Just be sure to get whichever size you want (minimum 4GB) and that you'll need two. I went with one 4GB for the temp and 32GB for the permanent.

The best answer I can find is to use a USB wifi adapter, this one seems to work for people but I've not tried it myself.

u/jaffster123 · 3 pointsr/tails

No, the issue is that Tails uses an old kernel and many modern Wireless adapters aren't supported.

Buy an Atheros card, these are 100% supported. I'm using one of these which works in Tails (and can do packet injection if you ever become interested in Wireless penetration / hacking) :

u/nipperfitz · 1 pointr/tails

I am having the same issue, but the USB wifi adapter im using is tails compatible (http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-150Mbps-Raspberry-Supports/dp/B003MTTJOY)

Any solutions?

u/0927a · 2 pointsr/tails

I got one of these for 95 bucks and it works well all around.

Only thing I don't like about it is that you can't boot from the built in sd card reader.

u/JustHAAAVE · 1 pointr/tails

Get this guy:

http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-150Mbps-Raspberry-Supports/dp/B003MTTJOY/

It's cheap, it'll work, and you can get it in a day if you're really impatient. You don't need to install anything, just plug it in and you're ready to go.

u/tight-lines · 1 pointr/tails

You'll need to buy an external wifi dongle - the internal MBP one doesnt work. I just ended up buying this one:

Get one with a metal case...

Kingston Technology DTSE9G2/32GB Data Traveler SE9 G2 32 GB USB 3.0 (Windows/Mac), Metal Casing, Silver https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SOL9ZLC/

u/Hyoscine · 1 pointr/tails

Just incase you're still struggling with this; google for USB WiFi dongles who's drivers are already in the kernel, and cross check the ones you like the look of for Mac compatability. This one looks promising.

u/csgoANONYMuser · 1 pointr/tails

http://amzn.com/B003MTTJOY

Thats the one I use, fully working, driverless, the size of a wireless mouse reciever... only 2.4Ghz networks but that's fine.

I don't know if there's any list, but the ones claiming to be Raspberry Pi compatible, usually work on Tails.

I don't know what you can do if you can't send it to your location. Maybe you could send it to a friend's house or your office or buy a similar one locally :/

u/DylanBleier · 2 pointsr/tails

there's no reason to use usb 3 as the data transfer rate isn't going to be the limiting factor. get this: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-DTSE9H-8GBZET/dp/B00DYQYJ3Q
