Just so I know, have you ever played any other stringed instruments? (Guitar, bass, etc.)

A lot of cheap ukuleles aren't great, yes. But this uke is pretty cheap, and it's fantastic. It's my first uke, I have it sitting next to me right now :) I've had it for about a year and a half now, and I've never had any problems regarding it getting scratched, dented, or any pieces coming loose or anything. This is fantastic, considering I definitely don't treat it as gently as I should.

Now, that's a soprano ukulele, so if you want a deeper richer tone, or if your body/hands are bigger (which isn't really a problem, though some people like a uke to match their size), you can go with a concert or tenor. Bass gets really deep, so unless you're looking for that specific sound I wouldn't look for a bass.

I have yet to find any cheap concerts that are decent quality. I'm probably going to be getting a concert as my second uke, so I've been looking into them a lot. If you want a nice concert, it's going to be upwards of 100, probably 200. You could probably get one cheaper, but the quality wouldn't really be worth it. Not only will the build be worse, but the sound is most of the concern. (This is the concert I want to buy. If you can afford any ukes from luna, I highly recommend them. Beautiful instruments)

Like most stringed instruments, you want to try to get a solid top. They sound much richer and the solid wood reverberates sounds much nicer. Some people like linoleum top, but the general consensus is solid tops are better. The Kala I linked to above is a solid top, to my knowledge.

Best case scenario, try to find a music store nearby that has a wide range of ukuleles and test some out. They should be able to provide you with a tuner if you know how to tune a ukulele (GCEA), of they can tune it for you so you can test it out. Before you go, I would try to memorize a few basic chords (C, G, Am, and F are good ones) so you can see how they sound. Once you find one you like, buy it online. The markup price in stores is ridiculous.

If you can't go into a nearby store, just buy online, and try to find a youtube vid of it being played before you purchase :)

I'd be happy to answer any more question you have about anything regarding ukes, or you can hop on over to /r/ukulele !

I recommend cooking! I was always kinda 'meh' in regards to it, but a few months ago my mother needed some help with making dinner and I was there, so I helped her. Since then I started picking up little things and parts of recipes before she decided to actually teach me. It's a pretty cool thing to do, and once you get the hang of it and begin making food for relatives/friends, you get to see their pleased faces. Always makes my day! There are people that say it's girly, but like /u/the_earl_of_grey said, it's a great life skill. Besides, you can make your favorite dishes instead of having to eat that horrible grub in your fridge.

If you're not interested in that, I also recommend reading a book or two. Maybe you can find some videogame-related books, like Ready Player One (I recommend it btw). If you're interested in history, I recommend A History of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren. Starts around 3000 BC, covers the revolutions, it's a great way to study History (especially in my grade) and teaches you interesting facts that your history teacher may have overlooked.

Other things you can do are:

  • Learn a language in Duolingo (or at least start learning? :P);
  • Read random articles in Cracked;
  • Create pretty images in Silk.

I was going to end this comment with 'We're in the internet, there's so much to do' but then I remembered I also get bored sometimes. Oh well.

Favourite: Oh, so many, but the most recently read favourite/book I waited the whole summer for (School was closed-too lazy and unwilling to sign up for shitty local library) is Code Name Verity. Was worth the whole six week wait, I assure you. A simply stunning tale of friendship, Gestapo, WW2, the French Resistance and flying. Also other things, but I suck at describing books.

Currently reading: A book called Butterfly Summer. Halfway through, current rating: Okay, would maybe read once again if extremely bored. I don't regret starting to read it as such, but wouldn't recommend too heartily to anyone else as the fundemental plot idea is good but the writing itself needs improvement.

Would recommend: White Crow, the aforementioned Code Name Verity.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams and the sequel to that (Both excellent reads).

Finding Cassie Crazy is quite good if you want something more teen-fiction-y, plot can get a bit confusing at times due to about six main characters but it's set out in a novel (excuse the pun) way- in the form of letters/diary entries/other stuff/ noticeboard notices all put together.

Torn is excellent- At first glance, the plot looks like it might rather predictable and done before. I assure you, it's not. The only annoying bit is the ending. The book seems to cut off a good chapter or two before I'd like it to, if you know what I mean, but I'll look past that for now.

I got a ukulele for Christmas, and I love it! It was super easy to learn using YouTube videos, although I already had music experience with piano.

I would recommend the Kala KA-15S if you're looking for a soprano uke. The Kala Makala is a little cheaper, but I think the extra dollars in the Kala KA-15S are worth its better quality. Ukes are one of the cheapest instruments out there anyway.

I went with a soprano uke bc my hands are pretty small, but you could go for a concert size if you prefer a deeper tone.

Yo! I personally use ableton, but FL studios should work just fine. I recommend getting an audio interface of some sort,

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01E6T56CM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473200568&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=audio+interface&dpPl=1&dpID=312239D3jLL&ref=plSrch

this one's pretty good for a beginner. Depending on what instruments you use and whether you sing or not would be helpful to know, if you want more advice.

This is really good, but I would get a better mic and a guitar recording interface if I were you.

Cheap microphone

More expensive microphones

Cheap audio interface

More expensive audio interface, not sure if it's better

Also get a pop filter, although this recording didn't seem to need one.

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

It's not particularly about being less depressed and all that, but I guarantee it will make you feel better.

Right now, The Crucible.

The most boring one I've been forced to read was Catcher in the Rye.

Using a throwaway...

So, I have a strong opinion about copyright laws and stuff like that. Pirating (notice, I'm using this term instead of "torrenting"; torrenting in itself isn't illegal, piracy is) software is not stealing, in my opinion. For something to be stolen, I believe that somebody has to be deprived of it - walking in a store and taking something off the shelf is stealing, but downloading some music isn't. Even if both are illegal, there's a line between moral and immoral. To me, pirating something from an indie author is totally immoral. This is often their only source of income, and that $20 for a game could be feeding them for a day or two. Pirating from a big company, like EA, on the other hand, doesn't seem immoral to me. The developers of games EA publishes are employees of multi-m/billion dollar companies, so that $20 is literally pocket change to them.

Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel said in his autobiography:

>Say you have a person who earns $50 a month. Should you expect him or her to pay $250 for the software? I don’t think it’s immoral for that person to illegally copy the software and spend that $250 for five months’ worth of salary on food. That kind of copyright infringement is morally okay. And it’s immoral — not to mention stupid — to go after such a “violator.”

This is only a small part of my actual opinion, but I believe what I said sums it up pretty well.

By the way, if you're interested in Linus Torvalds, I'd highly suggest you read his biography. I've read it four times, and each time I learn something new.
