A revamp of a detailed accessories listing that I posted a few days ago:

Interior Essentials:

  1. Matte Screen Protector. When the sun is setting behind you as you drive, you will be blinded by reflections off the fingerprints and oil on your screen. A matte screen protector will prevent fingerprints and smudges from forming, while also diffusing reflected sunlight so it's not nearly as blinding. I got the Abstract Ocean one, but there are lots of good options.
  2. All-weather Floor Mats. The mats that come with the Model 3 are not good. I personally got the MaxPider 3D mats to replace them.
  3. Center Console Wrap: The piano-black center console is coated with a plastic that picks up fingerprints and scratches extremely easily, so you'll definitely want to install a vinyl wrap over top of it. I got one from Kenriko, and I'm very happy with it.
  4. 64GB+ USB thumb drive. Format it with the FAT32 file system, and put a folder at the root of the drive called "TeslaCam", then plug it into one of the two USB ports beneath the center display, under the phone dock. This will activate the built-in dashcam on your Model 3, and it will record everything that the front camera and two side cameras see in a 1-hour loop. You can then press the camera icon in the top right of the screen to permanently save the last ten minutes of recordings, in case you get into an accident, or see something else you want to keep. If you're a little more tech savvy, check out TeslaUSB, a Raspberry Pi-based storage system that will automatically copy dashcam and sentry clips to your computer at home.
  5. Ultra-bright trunk LEDs. The OEM LEDs that illuminate the trunk are pathetic. Get the Abstract Ocean ones for 16x more brightness, so you can actually see the contents of your trunk at night. You need two.

    Interior Optional:

  6. Interior door handle wrap. The Model 3's emergency door release handle is extremely easy for passengers to accidentally use to open the front doors. This is no longer as big of a deal as it once was (pulling it used to sometimes break your window, until a software update fixed it), but getting a wrap for at least the front doors is quite handy, as it'll cover up the emergency release handle, obscuring its purpose. The wrap is perforated, though, so you can still pull the handle in case of a real emergency. I got mine from RPMTesla.
  7. Dash wrap. If you got the black interior but you don't like the wood panel on the dash, wrapping it works great. I used this one from Abstract Ocean.
  8. Puddle Light Projectors. These things are cool, but a little pricey (~$45 for a pair). They replace the puddle lights, which shine down from the bottom of each door, with an ultra-bright LED that shines a Tesla-related logo onto the ground. I got the ones that shine the "Tesla T", but you can get all kinds of other ones. And I'd highly recommend getting the Abstract Ocean ones, as the other manufacturers that you can get these from for cheaper make them out of crap.
  9. The Ultimate Reflector. A windshield shade custom-built for the Model 3. It works great for keeping the sun off your interior while the car is parked outside all day when you're at work. Long term sun exposure will damage your seats and possibly overheat your center screen.
  10. "Door Open" Decals. If you find your passengers consistently forget how to open the door from the inside (like my mom...), these decals are awesome. Super cheap, but very effective.
  11. Aluminum "Performance" Pedals. There are replacement covers for your pedals that make them look like the Performance edition's pedals. IMO they're much snazzier than the default ones, and since the accelerator one is also a little larger and grippier than the default, it makes it easier to keep your foot planted on it without it sliding off. Be sure to get the ones that match your Tesla, though. The Model S/X ones are slightly too large for the Model 3.

    Exterior:

  12. Stronger Frunk Struts. The i1Tesla channel introduced the world to using stronger struts in the frunk to make it pop all the way open when you open it, rather than simply unlatching and sitting there, mostly closed. Get the ones from the link in the video description, rather than the ones that specifically advertise themselves as Model 3 frunk struts, though. Those guys just sell you the exact same piece of equipment for a massive markup compared to buying the originals off Amazon. i1Tesla also came up with a solution for the rear trunk, but I personally don't use it.
  13. Paint Protection Film (PPF): Tesla makes their cars in California, which has much stricter air quality laws than any other place in the world where cars get made. Thus, they need to use a slightly different paint formulation than other manufacturers, and this does lead to "softer" paint. If you want to protect your paint from rocks flying up from cars in front of you and taking chips out of it, Paint Protection Film is the only option. It's pricey, but some people find it worthwhile. You don't really need to get any more done than what installers generally call the "front package", which is the front bumper, hood, and side panels back to the forward doors (some will add the rocker panels below the doors, too). That personally cost me $1700 to have done in LA, using XPel PPF. The costs will be different depending on where you live and which brand and type of PPF you get.
  14. Ceramic Coat: If you want your car to be easier to hand-wash yourself, a ceramic coat can help. It's like painting a very thin layer of glass right on top of your paint, and it adds both a very high shine, and a hydophobic layer to your paint, which makes water run right off the surface.

If you plan to wash your car yourself, this video goes into good detail on how to go about it, including which washing products to buy.

    Apps:

If you're OK with using your Tesla account credentials in a third-party app (they don't ever upload said credentials anywhere, they just use them locally to generate a Tesla API token), you can do all kinds of extra stuff that the base Tesla app doesn't support. Like Siri Shortcuts that activate Summon, or automatic Sentry Mode when parked at any location that you haven't marked as "safe", or all kinds of additional statistics tracking. The two apps I've used are "Remote S" and "Stats: for Tesla model S/X/3". Those are for iOS, but I'm sure they, or something similar, are also available for Android.

There's also TeslaFi.com, which is a website that works much like the phone apps I just mentioned, but does all KINDS of extra stuff. One of my favorite features is that I've got it set up to send me a text right before I got to bed if my car is at home, but unplugged. And it can do sooo much more than that. It does cost $5/mo, though you can get a free month-long trial if you use any existing user's TeslaFi referral code.

Thanks for the confirmation. That’s great to hear. Now if they’d just hurry up and let me order one - I’ve been on the invitation list since it was announced.

There are some interesting Tesla-specific Alexa skills, like this one, that might be worth checking out. This might be a way to get better voice controls in the car for stuff like climate, opening the Frunk, etc. until Tesla gets around to implementing it natively.

It’s also worth noting that this would be a cool way to control some of your home automation, if you have any (lights, garage door, etc.). I also find the “announce” or “tell everybody” feature to be useful to play a message on all the Echos in the house (e.g. “Alexa, tell everyone I’ll be home in 5 minutes”).

How are you mounting it/where do you have it placed in the car? I’ve been thinking of the best way to approach that. I know it comes with double sided tape, but I love how minimalist the Model 3 interior is, and would want to find a way to make it pretty much hidden, while still being able to hear voice commands. Interested on your take.

Have fun with it, and let us know if you find any cool uses for it!

Thanks, everyone, I really appreciate all the comments. I'm not sure if there is an issue with my SSD because it seems to connect to both my Mac and PC intermittently. I'm going to return it and today I'll be getting one of these:

SanDisk 256GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive

Hopefully I won't have issues. I also like that it's super small and not a big box laying in the compartment.

Thanks again,

Vic

>and I need a charger installed on the wall. Is that right?

Since we're all Tesla nerds, the charger is actually in the car. You're installing electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE). The outlet, really.

But yeah, outside outlet is fine - that's what I'm doing. Run two 240-V lines each with a 50A breaker, or one 240-V lines with 100A breaker. There's plenty of outdoor/weatherproof covers. My existing one (for our barn, but it's a 14-50) is pretty ugly, but I'm sure you can shop around. And most are pretty wide, but again, just look for 14-50 covers. You could also do one on the left and one on the right instead of the middle pillar. Tesla has its own connector, the HPWC, for the same price as an extra UMC. So you can use a 14-50 and the included UMC and not have a spare one for the trunk, or use a UMC and buy a spare UMC, or use the HPWC and keep the UMC in the trunk. The HPWC looks nice and is weatherproof, but only works for Teslas. I'd go with the UMC for flexibility (and $500 cheaper if you don't mind not having a spare, or put it in your trunk each day).

Retractable is tough - the Model 3 UMC cable has a big blob on the 'house end', so it won't go into a reel. There are UMC organizers which make it look less crappy at least.

I'm still debating on where to put mine - my wife gave me the okay for an outlet on the front of the house, which makes things easy. Tromping to the side of the house, especially in rain, wouldn't be fun, but it would look neater. Also note the cable is only 20' (24'?) long, which isn't much, especially if you want it resting on the ground. I had a parking pad built just for the Model 3 and I still had to buy an extension cable unless I get the outlet right up to the corner of the house. Anyway, my point is that the cable will probably be pretty ugly, so I'd talk to HOA now. I refuse to live with an HOA and can do whatever I want, and even I still might do the side of my house because cables are ugly.

Myself and a number of other owners have opted for this cover that goes under the car seat. That said, the white seats are super easy to take care of - I don't consider this a must-have and not all car seats are designed to work on top of a seat cover.

I do think some sort of cover for the seat backs (protecting the back of the diver's seat) is a must. Perhaps something like this

u/geo38 · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

You won't find a dryer extension cord.

The solution is to buy an adapter that converts from the dryer outlet to a NEMA 14-50. That allows to use the charger included with your X. But, as noted, you need to dial down the current to 24A (80% of the 30Amp dryer outlet). The car's charger thinks its plugged into a 50Amp outlet, and it is, but on the end of your adapter. The car will try and draw 40Amps (80% of 50Amps) and blow the breaker on your dryer outlet. So, in the car, dial the current down to 24A.

If the cord on the charger that came with your X is not long enough, and it's pretty long, then you need a NEMA 14-50 extension cord. They are not cheap. https://www.amazon.com/Camco-55194-PowerGrip-Extension-Cord/dp/B002XL2IG8/

Warning: There are two types of dryer outlets in the USA depending upon when the outlet was installed. The older one with only three pins (a 10-30 outlet), and the newer one with four pins , a 14-30. So, you should pick up a converter for both if you don't know what style dryer outlet your friend has.

u/soapinmouth · 1 pointr/teslamotors

Since the model 3 doesn't have a spare, I highly recommend one of those portable compressors with the goo that can patch up leaks super easily. They're like $30.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001DZFZPG/ref=oh_aui_i_d_old_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/DopeWeasel · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

I beg to differ... for $30 this is one of the cheapest mods I have done and was very quick and easy to install. Forget about noise dampening for a moment. The doors sound much more solid during close and give a nice sort of pop when opening. Door sill will stay nice and clean. I bought this kit during a sale: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07R13DYYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3K5hDbEZK2Q8X

u/AvinashL · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

i got this in white. . . one for both of our model 3's. both work great! bad reviews are from the 1st gen of the controller. 2nd gen apparently doesn't have any problems and it's made by amazon so apparently they back it well if it does break. so far it's been great!

u/kushari · 7 pointsr/teslamotors

Make sure you get a good cables though, don't want to start a fire. Also for the quick220, you need to use two different lines. So it might be tricky. If your friend has a dryer, you can get a 220 extension cable like this one from amazon. Hopefully their's is Nema 14-50, not 30.

u/krtrice · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

I think the quality of your experience will depend on the quality of the app that the manufacturer provides to access the files. As others have said, I’ve never heard of this brand before so I’d want to check out their app reviews.

I went with a Sandisk model that has the same dual lightning to USB dual connectors. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CIEBXZG/ref=psdcmw_3151491_t1_B01MPXCGW3

Their app is really good and stable, and I’m able to quickly move files from the drive onto my phone (and even quickly watch the videos on my phone to identify the right file to move) before I leave the car, so I can always leave the drive in the car. Has worked really great for me so far.

u/DDotJ · 8 pointsr/teslamotors

I have one on my desk, it's a 3D printed Tesla Supercharger Cell Phone Charger ($20). It says iPhone but you can stick any cable you want in there. I use it with my USB C Android Device and it fits just fine.

Here it is on my desk along with my Tesla Model S key fob and Model S Matchbox Model.

And of course, the Tesla Online Apparel Shop has some neat stuff as well.

u/sodakas · 1 pointr/teslamotors

Sorry for the late reply - I ordered Left/Right, though I think Up/Up might've been better. In any event, I just recycled a small USB hub I had lying around (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JX1ZS5O), and it worked just fine for both power and storage. I figure I would have to use a hub at some point, since the DVR memory supposedly requires that you connect it directly to the port. I... personally don't see why this is required from a technical point of view, so I can only presume it must be a disclaimer, since they don't want to get in the business of certifying extension cords and hubs.

I hope they announce some details about the memory capacity requirements for the DVR, as that would help me pick out what type of memory to purchase -- in the meantime, I'll just throw a 128GB on it for now and see how far that gets me... Uhh, once I get v9, of course. :)

u/androidzerofour · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I use this 4 port USB 3.1 hub. Works great. I have passenger phone cable, dashcam USB, and music USB on it with one available port. I also like that the buttons allow you to turn off each port individually https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00JX1ZS5O

u/atlastracer · 1 pointr/teslamotors

Hopefully! I know it's not an issue with filling up as I have a 32gb and I had 1 session saved to it before and after the reformat I hadn't saved anything yet.

What brands are your USB sticks? Maybe it's an issue with the brand.

I'm using: SanDisk 32GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B077VXV323?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/senfmeister · 5 pointsr/teslamotors

You can do this for Sentry if you don't mind some tinkering: https://github.com/marcone/teslausb/

I started using TeslaFi two days after I got my car, I wish I'd done that from the beginning. If you want to try it a referral code can double your trial period (to a month from two weeks, I believe).

This USB hub works great for all the stuff I have plugged in: https://smile.amazon.com/Anker-4-Port-Macbook-Surface-Notebook/dp/B00XMD7KPU/

u/NewUserNewMe · 1 pointr/teslamotors

I got a Nomad and I love it. The Nomad pad was extremely grippy and my iPhone X does not slide no matter how fast I go around corners.

I’m not sure if they updated this in the new version, but the original version needed to use both front USB ports in order to turn on (which blocks you from using the new v9 dashcam feature). If you want to use the built in dashcam feature, you might have to get something like get this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JX1ZS5O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_l232n94kEzJ9E

u/CAPSLOCKCHAMP · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

I was concerned about that too since I love listening to music and appreciate the quiet cabin. It’s a bit louder than the aeros but I haven’t found it to be annoying. I also bought this kit to get back some of the quiet and it made a little difference but still not as quiet as the aeros:

https://www.amazon.com/BASENOR-Soundproof-Rubber-Weather-Reduction/dp/B07R13DYYY/ref=gwm_tlc_pi?pf_rd_s=blackjack-personal-1&pf_rd_t=Gateway&pf_rd_i=mobile&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=VEKTZVMWME85X2TEAQ0W&pf_rd_p=1dfcfc84-3ad7-4be1-8cf4-d1dd1de5a0dc&pd_rd_i=B07R13DYYY

It’s very dependent on the road. If you do 85 miles an hour (typical Bay Area fast lane), and the road isn’t great it will be noticeable.

u/Essobie · 1 pointr/teslamotors

This one is great, inexpensive, and can be easily attached to the back "wall" of the center console below the two main USB ports with some double stick velcro: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JX1ZS5O

I've used it for charging 2 phones, a 128GB TeslaCam/SentryCam drive, and a 64GB Music USB Drive for about 2 months now, with zero issues.

It looks like you can get the Connect Wireless Stick on Amazon for about $20.

The price of the Pi $10, the cable, $2.50, and the SD card, $9, comes close enough not to make much difference.

I think you're right that the archiving wouldn't be automatic, though. Maybe someone can think of a way to automate the process using this device, though. That'd be neat!

u/mahkus11 · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

I was finally able to find a reddit user to trade so that I'll have two lightning cables for the front dock (I have no interest in wireless charging).

Does anybody have a recommendation for something I can use to split the USB port so I can charge an iPhone while also using the dashcam? I was looking at this Anker unit on Amazon. Thanks!

Our car seat doesn’t slide at all. I have a very nice seat protector which I bought when we had a bmw. Then when we got the tesla I moved it over. I use both latch points and the tether for the top hook. Also I put all my weight down on the car seat while I tighten the latch strap. No problems here other then having to dust off my leather seat anytime I remove the car seat for other reasons.

FYI this is the seat protector I purchased and highly recommend it. It’s well worth the extra premium vs Chinese crap. Doesn’t stain leather. I removed the blue inserts on mine

just gonna paste my question from yesterday sense i didn’t really get a response!

i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the dash cam to work in this car. i have looked up and followed a tutorial for it. i bought a 128GB USB flash drive, used a 3rd party program to format it to fat32, and put a folder called “TeslaCam” into it. it always pops up with a grey x on the little camera icon that should have the green circle. could anyone please give me some advice for this?

Was there any explanation for the additional 1.5 week delay that you were told on Wednesday morning?

I'm with you on most of your rant - it's ridiculous and frustrating that they would miss deadlines continually on delivering you your car.

The spare tire thing, you can call it elitist if you want, but it's a general trend in the industry for cars that aren't intended to go off-road. So I would think Subaru will continue to deliver cars with a spare tire, but every EV that I've ever seen (Bolt, Leaf, Ioniq) has skipped them to save weight and for Tesla's the assumption is that you can use Tesla's Roadside Assistance if you have a flat. I think as we go forward you will find fewer and fewer sedans - EV or not - that come with a spare tire. I carry this in my Model 3: https://www.amazon.com/Slime-70005-Safety-7-Minute-Repair/dp/B001DZFZPG

Also, if you want my opinion on the delay, my guess would be that they found something wrong with your car during final inspection and are fixing it. If I'm correct, then they don't want to tell you this because most people don't want to hear "we found something wrong" and a unspecified delay.

When you get the car, you will likely love it. It looks fantastic, mine gets lots of attention and it is loads of fun to drive. Hang in there.

I have this one:

There's a 30-foot version, but they're surprisingly bulky and heavy, about a pound per foot.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024ECIP0

Whatever you get, make sure it's actually rated 50A/120kW, there are some on the market that can only do 20A or something, and the UMC will refuse to use it at all.

Was this the official Microsoft one? I saw someone mention this somewhere, I think it is cheaper than the M$ one, just dunno if it works/works well.

Do I need a USB hub at this point? Since I use DashCam and now need to take up another port. Just want to know what the known-best hardware is if someone knows, so I don't have to re-research it from scratch myself.

u/jsm11482 · 1 pointr/teslamotors

You'd need an adapter and/or short extension cord to plug the included mobile charger into. Tesla sells the adapter for $45.

If you get an extension cord, make sure it's heavy gauge and not a cheap POS. I got this 50 amp cord and it's a beast. You'd need a 30 amp cord, though.

or one with USB c also so you can plug it into your android phone and pull any files you need:

Something like this, although you'd need a computer(e.g. raspberry pi) to connect to its AP and pull the data off.

Just bought one, we'll see how it goes.

I have not had this issue yet. I got a new usb drive about 2 weeks ago. No issues and I’ve never had to pause it when getting out of the car.

Here is the one I got...maybe it will be more reliable for someone as well.

I have a list of accessories (and links) that I'm going to personally get, I'll shoot them off to you when I get back to my computer. Things like DashCam, upgraded LED lights, phone mounts, paint protections and other interior accessories.

This is what I'm planning thus far (Prices are approximate):

Have the Jeda. And this splitter to still use the dashcam feature.

After the update recently killed the ability to use both ports in the front my wireless chargers cords are both plugged into the splitter. Works great.

Based on another post I read somewhere I just bought a SanDisk Wireless Stick 64GB currently on sale at Microcenter for $29.99 instead of the normal $59.99. What's cool about it is that it has built-in wifi and a battery. Right now the car is in my garage and off but I can copy files to and from the flash drive over the wifi connection. That means you could not only grab the dashcam video but also copy mp3 files to the car. Can't wait to get v9 to try it out.

Edit: Amazon link as well

u/hkibad · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

I have this splitter. One side I have my flash drive plugged in to play music, the other side is a Qi charger with this sticky thing on top. I can play music and charge the phone at the same time, but I haven't tested how much slower the phone charges.

In April 2016 the old kit was $50 + $14 shipping

The old kit was a close match for https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DZFZPG — which only costs $37 shipped today. But the new one looks different

Not standard. I got a Slime Tire Repair Kit based on recommendations from here.

What USB stick is the community buying for dash cam (specifically Model 3)? What feature is most important?

u/preswest · 3 pointsr/teslamotors

All my cars did this. Unfortunately for you and me, its most noticeable on white cars mostly as the dirt blends into darker colors.

I installed these on mine and it does help quite a bit with the dirt. amazon.com/BASENOR-Soundproof-Rubber-Weather-Reduction/dp/B07R13DYYY. Side effect is you now have to close the doors with a little more force, especially the back ones.

I understood that line as write speed=15X4=60 MB/s whereas one may read it as 15X standard=4 MB/s which I'm guessing you did? I googled around a few other benchmarking sites and they seem to indicate write speeds somewhere in between the two readings of what's on the sandisk website. . 1 2 3 4 Let me know if I'm missing something obvious here.

u/madmax_br5 · 7 pointsr/teslamotors

Sorry this is just not accurate. There are only about ten turns of the coil here. I ran it through an inductance calculator and this coil only produces .09mH per conductor. that works out to about .04 miliTeslas at 30A current, which is about 100X less than a refrigerator magnet. So totally immaterial and no issue to use this extension, which is of course rated for this purpose.

The actual risk in a coiled wire is thermal and comes from the wire not being able to disperse heat effectively. This is not a risk for a 30’ wire with ten turns if used at or below it’s rated capacity. The one you show in the photo is rated to 20A.

But this is an expensive way to do it; you could just get a #8 extension cord and it would be a lot cheaper and avoid the coiling issue. For example here’s a 30 foot, 50A extension for about 100 bucks:

Why not just get one of those WIFI enabled usb drives. USB DRIVE

Have it wirelessly back up every hour or so, or you can write a script to send it to some cloud shit.
