Probably the best one I've ever read was Red Army, by Ralph Peters. It tells the same kind of story (conventional war in Europe, late '80s) from the perspective of the Soviets, and it does a very, very good job of both humanizing them and presenting a more politically realistic vision of how such a conflict would go.

There is only 1 book, it's actually in the middle of the Jack Ryan series of books. It's 740 pages. It a been a while since I read it, so I don't remember the content specifically, but 80s/90s Tom Clancy novels tend to have some occasional profanity and minimal and vague, if any sexual content. The profanity is generally from some of the rougher characters in the stories. IIRC the language is all pretty standard and doesn't get too creative.
But the themes are very adult in nature. Rainbow six is about a counter terror unit, so as you could imagine there is a fair amount of violence and death.
I'd say it depends on the maturity level of the child, but I think 13-15 is probably the minimum age.
