I frequent r/cscareerquestions and if one piece of advice gets reiterated more than any other, it is the importance of programming as a hobby.

I took programming fundamentals I and II at TCCD before I decided to transfer here, and I was surprised to find out that fundamentals II is equivalent to compsci I not II. In addition, programming fund I (a 4 credit hour class) is equivalent to the developmental programming class offered here that people test out of in like 15 easy multiple-choice questions. I'm hoping CS2 at UTD is much better than what I already took. I hope you didn't fall into the same trap I did.

>would not programming in my free time also be damaging to my undergraduate journey towards a CS major/job?

I personally think if software development is your goal, then not programming at all is going to limit your opportunities when you graduate. I think ideally you want to get an internship and get paid to program. Doing it on the side can help you get that internship. Also, If you care about programming, then it makes it easier to read about it. A good book I can't recommend enough is clean code and/or the video series of the book.

I mean its just like anything else in life. I can play the first few bars of the song "One" by Metallica on the guitar, but I can't play the whole song. Why? because I never put in the effort it takes to get good at playing the guitar, so I suck at it. Software development is no different.

Look into getting an Aeropress. I'm borderline retarded doing anything in the kitchen but everyday I have several people in my UV apartment building ask if they can come by for a coffee made by moi. Super easy.

If I were you, I would either (A) make sure you have a solder vent sucker like this: http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WSA350-Bench-Smoke-Absorber/dp/B000EM74SK/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414620595&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=weller+solder+vent

or (B) request badge access to the labs. A lot of students don't know this but you can easily request 24/7 badged access into the building and labs. That's how I used equipment any time of the day or night for any reason.

See if you can't buy/check out the REA Chemistry CLEP book for a refresher. I bought the three books for my three exams, read through each and took the two included practice exams, and passed all three of my CLEPs on the first go with just two days studying for each. Had been more than 10 years since I had taken a history class (and I never even took Psych!). Easier subjects than chem though, of course.

I took Calc I & II last semesters and we used [this textbook] (https://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Ron-Larson/dp/1285057090). Check again in a month on coursebook, but you'll most likely use the same book.

Ochem: Grab an old Morrison & Boyd book for sub $20 and go through the chapters that correspond to the Ochem 1 syllabus of previous years. M&B is so far the best no-bullshit way to instruct organic chemistry, and it's a goddamn shame UTD profs don't use it, because the rest of the textbook out there I've come across kinda suck. You can find it cheaper, but this is the edition I bought for myself after I borrowed and used my dad's 2nd edition book for my undergrad. https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-6th-Robert-Morrison/dp/0136436692
