I've been fine with the simple set up, but a little bit of bug spray outside the van always helps.
It comes down to what you want to do and what your comfort level is. In some dream world I'd love to chop my van full of holes and install heating, plumbing, cooling, a second battery with solar, etc. It looks really fun. And I've done a ton of research into it. But my first test drive without any of those things went surprisingly well and so I've just knocked those ideas down the list of priorities.
Instead I've been focusing my time and effort on teaching myself how to replace and upgrade mechanical and wear components like suspension, paint, engine modifications and so on. My goal is to get my van up to 333k miles.
There is a YouTube channel, Travelling Troy, he does a great job of showing how to do all kinds of cool vandwelling mods.
