An oil like this will help a ton. That's what it's made for.

Use a clean wax paper strip instead of a paper towel, they're much sturdier and won't tear as easily. Turn your pot on high heat and hopefully that'll warm up the outside of your pot a bit as well. Once you have everything cleaned up, finish with 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove the greasy residue.
Before you start waxing, put a towel down that you don't care about ruining, or you can get something like https://www.amazon.com/Spa-Essentials-White-Table-Paper/dp/B002T3EQBA/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1495134609&sr=8-1&keywords=waxing+table+paper if you prefer disposable. I use the same paper to cover my treatment bed when waxing clients. As far as getting the wax off your rug, you're probably never going to get it all out. Other than the oil, try taking a brown paper bag and placing it over the wax spot, then run a hot iron across the bag a few times to heat up the wax. Just make sure you completely cover the wax spot...you don't want wax on your iron. The wax will stick to the bag and you can throw the bag away. Keep repeating that until you've removed as much as you can. Then follow up with the oil.
