Seconded! I recently bought the Kindle book based on the reviews from yourself and /u/overnightyeti, so thank you both for the recommendation.

If anyone else wants to take a look, get the free pdf from Andersen's website. You give them an email address, they send a link to the Dropbox, which has two files: The blue and white one, "Swimming in Deep Water," is the one you want. The red and black one, Deep Water Superset Samples, has recommended combinations and links to Andersen's demo videos on YouTube. You can safely skip the autobiographical information (you're welcome). The program intro starts on Chapter 4 (page 33 of 78), and the outlines on page 36.

Or, you can skip that and get the $10 Kindle book and support the author. I like supporting people who provide free stuff, in the hopes they'll provide more free stuff in the future. But the text is exactly identical, as far as I can see. The free .pdf is maybe a little prettier, with the outlines visible at a glance instead of over multiple pages. Again, programs start at Chapter 4.

Make sure you've had your coffee if you read through or go to the website. Portions are like being yelled at by a wrestling announcer.

  • I used to play rugby at the Division II level as a flanker, center, and hooker. Stopping playing as of last fall to focus on a powerlifting career, but plan to return in the Fall,
  • For my strength training, I normally made it a case to implement 5/3/1 with the two day a week schedule on Monday and Wednesday, to go along with club practices on Tuesday and Thursday. I took Friday off for Saturday matches, and then performed extra mobility and recovery training on Sunday.
  • 5/3/1
  • Being more powerful helped me both in resiliency and in ability to tackle well. Especially in tackling ability, I found I was able to individually tackle exceptionally well, and make hard hits on larger players.

As Bill Starr has written on numerous occassions, training the shrug as an accessory lift does have carryover effects to the power clean and Olympic lifting in general. In this vein, loaded carries are another useful general conditioning movement that improves all athletic endevours, including most weight training activities, regardless of specificity. For bodybuilders or anyone interested in trapezius hypertrophy, shrugged loaded carries open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Smallest plates my gym has are 1.25 kg. My ghetto version of micro-loading is to put three pairs of collars on. If successful, next session I add 2.5 kg and don't use any collars.

On Amazon, these spring collars are 6.4 ounces each (12.8 for the pair). Another pair are listed as 1 lb.

Not sure how sustainable this is, though. Seems like it may eventually be a good idea to use collars while pressing, and not use them while benching (alone).

I found The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook to be an excellent resource to both help diagnose the real cause of an issue as well as treat it. Big take away: generally what hurts isn't where the problem originates or where the treatment should be concentrated.

It's just called Deep Water, haha. Good read though.

Reminder - Westside vs. The World is available to rent today for $4. (or $5 if you want to see Louie Simmons in glorious HD)

u/paulwhite959 · 1 pointr/weightroom

kind of. What about those smaller portable ones like this from titan? I'm wondering if buying them is worth it or not. I think they'd fit in my gym bag (although god, they'd take up most of it). So I could take them to my gym and use 'em.

u/wbyf · 2 pointsr/weightroom

Oops. Try this one

If that doesn't work, it's the gymboss interval timer. I'm sure any of the cheapo timers on Amazon would work fine, that's just the one I actually own

/u/gzcl recommended these rugby shorts (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008MX9SEQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Z60nxbMY165X4) to me in the past. They're 5", stretchy, lightweight, and will add 15 lbs to your squat, guaranteed.

Lululemon also had 5" running shorts that I like to squat in. Very lightweight, airy, and non restrictive.

Your results may vary.

Any suggestions of lifting-related equipment I can nab for $50 or less? I’ve got some birthday money from relatives and I’d like to save most of it but get myself a little something.

Current ideas include a heavy-ish medicine ball (45 lb), an adjustable sandbag (seems kinda pricey considering I can get a bag of sand for under $5 and throw it in an old duffel bag), a Viking press landmine attachment, one of those A7 shirts with the grippy back,
and these portable Titan farmer handle things. Think I’ve ruled out the duffel and the medicine ball though.

Haha, no worries. I use these, they're fine. The plain cotton ones might be even better from a durability standpoint.

I suppose you could try to learn on your own by reading a book like The Mechanics of Sprinting and Hurdling (a very good book, by the way), but even so, you would at least have to be able to film yourself, which is harder than when lifting for the obvious reason that you are not stationary. You could get a training partner to operate the camera, but then you are no longer really learning to sprint on your own, are you?

Edit: This book is also quite good, and arguably more practical, though less thorough.

Squats, deadlifts, power cleans/olympic lifts, depth jumps (assuming you're already strong) and, of course, sprints.

IMO, the NSCA's Developing Speed and Kelly Baggett's Vertical Jump Bible are both great resources on the topic (the latter is more specific to jumping, but there's a lot of crossover to sprinting).

u/thatmorrowguy · 2 pointsr/weightroom

They only have these guys, and they're pretty old and bent out of shape. I use them, but I'll have to try getting them even tighter.

u/NeptLudi · 3 pointsr/weightroom

The beginner program link listed in the FAQ basically recommends Starting Strength.

Read it and do what it says. You'll need an olympic bar, some plates, power rack, and a bench.

I got this in September and I'm still wondering if I should put it in my will to leave to my descendants (it's lasting that long). Worth it.

u/iDeZey · 4 pointsr/weightroom

That is correct. I googled the straps and they are shown as 2 identical straps. It has some photos of strongmen wearing them, 1 is upside down and the other isn't.

Wraps or straps? I got the elitefts normal wrist wraps in 80cm.

I also have some cheapo Harbinger straps, but those are different.

It may get caught by a spam filter but I'll try:

I had the same issue with the wrist when I hurt my shoulder. You might wanna look into trigger point massage. That really helped me at the time.. Just my 2c.

If/when my crappy Harbinger ones break I'll probably buy these.

We talked briefly about your knee pain a while back. Have you been spreading the floor (twisting legs into the ground) more consistently since then? Does it help at all?

We also talked about the effect it can have on maintenance of lumbar neutral during your squats. Any luck with that, or do you still see a significant buttwink?

If the doctor immediately suggests xrays, MRI, opioids, or injections, I would suggest that you politely decline. Unless you have constant, unremitting pain that does not vary with activity and you have changes in your ability to control bowel/bladder...then imaging would make sense.

For your reference, one A-P lumbar xray delivers the same amount of radiation as 20 A-P chest xrays. And they are very rarely necessary.

These books can help you manage your back pain independently:

Treat Your Own Back

Back Mechanic

For your sanity, your presentation of symptoms sounds pretty normal. But to keep stuff from getting worse, any activity that makes symptoms travel lower down than your back need to be avoided for a week or two, maybe longer depending on how you're treated.

This may help.

Or this.

I know even in military combatives classes they taught us "you're learning just enough to get yourself fucked up if you get froggy". There's no reason to get to blows with someone unless you're looking to do that anymore, so going halfway into training for it doesn't sound smart.
