Anthropology and The Witcher? Fascinating! I love Anthropology, folklore, history, and mythology. Another thing you could discuss are the culture ideas of certain monster contracts, like In the Heart of the Woods, how the Leshen can either be acknowledged as a protective forest spirit or a malicious beast killing whoever it can that enters its territory.

Religion could also be discussed as it is also very important to cultures both in real life and in the world of the Witcher...speaking of which, I highly recommend you acquire this book: https://www.amazon.com/World-Witcher-Video-Game-Compendium/dp/1616554827/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

I bought it several months ago and it's been a great and fascinating read and may help you a great deal! Good luck on the Path.

u/pneumatici · 2 pointsr/witcher

Sure, a couple notes while I'm downloading BaW :)

The book order is thus:

The Last Wish

Sword of Destiny

Blood of Elves

The Time of Contempt

Baptism of Fire

The Tower of the Swallows

The Lady of the Lake

There's no official english translation of the last book yet, but the one I've linked is the best fan translation I've found. It's the one I read, and I honestly would have had no idea it wasn't a "real" edition if I didn't know better. Fantastic work.

There's also A Season of Storms, which is sort of a midquel for the series. But it was written in the last two years, has no bearing on any of the game's canon, and contain some minor potential spoilers for later books since he expected his readers had finished the series at this point. I recommend you ignore it for now, and if you decide you want to read it down the road pick it up after the series.

The first two books are a short story collections. The series is in chronological order, but the actual novel arc doesn't begin until the third book. Definitely don't skip the first two though, they set up important characters and events in Geralt's life prior to the novel arc beginning.

Lastly, if you really can't be bothered to spend a bit on the amazon paperbacks here's a link to all of them in epub format. I can't vouch for the quality of the fan translations in this pack, nor do I recommend this format. Buying the books supports the author and reading a book is still easier than reading on a tablet in my opinion.

Good luck on your journey into the Witcher!

P.S. - Oh, here is the Witcher 1 recap video I mentioned. DO NOT WATCH THIS until after you finish the books. It will spoil the climax of the series and ruin your reading. You can buy the game dirt cheap if you can handle a playthrough on PC, but you really won't miss a ton of important info if you skip it. I don't want to spoil the end of the books either, but essentially the second and third game don't rely on the first one at all aside from knowing cursory details of the first game.

u/Finlay44 · 2 pointsr/witcher

The fan translations get the story across, but they're not error-free. At points, though, they do capture the spirit of Sapkowski's original prose even better than the professional translations, but the latter are still overall better and more enjoyable to read.

You can order the official translations from most online bookstores, like Amazon. The set behind the link has the first six books, meaning The Lady of the Lake and Season of Storms (when it comes out in about three months) need to be separately purchased.

u/BoahNoa · 2 pointsr/witcher

You could get this instead of the strategy guide. I own it and can vouch that it has a very well made and detailed beastiery but it is more focused on lore than specifics so idk how useful it would be for playing a tabletop RPG. It also has information about the different kingdoms, religions, and much more. Best part about it is that the whole book is supposed to be written by Dandelion and other characters. The section on Witchers is by Vesemir and the beastiary section by Geralt, etc.

Ok, so your response was a little confusing, but after a bit of homework, it's become more clear: Danusia is the translator for my copy as well, and that's fine - I'm only a few pages in, it may very well get better later on. She was responsible for TLW and Blood of Elves. But apparently after the first two, she stepped down and Mr. French took her place for Time of Contempt and Baptism of Fire, along with presumably any future translations.

It sounds like you've been enjoying the full series quite a bit, regardless of translator. What is your opinion of French's work, and does it detract at all compared to Stok?

u/Oniwabanshu · 1 pointr/witcher

None, from what I can tell. The differences are that the publishers give different covers, letter size and book size. The issue seems to be with the translator, because for The Time of Contempt and Baptism of Fire, which I own (The ToC is from Orbit and BoF from Gollancz), have the same translator. David French is his name.

Now if you wish for a good translation for The Last Wish and maybe also from Blood of Elves, pick the one from Danusia Stok (Orbit). Which in my opinion was an excellent read. Here are the links:

Well, I don't know about wrap up covers, but the UK version of the books are pretty decent. You can find them on Amazon as well: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Wish-Andrzej-Sapkowski/dp/0575082445

u/BrynR123 · 2 pointsr/witcher

Yeah there are 3 different series they did. The art is fantastic, as are the stories. You can get the collection books where they put all the comics in a series into one book. I'd recommend getting them in physical form from Amazon. Here: Witcher Volume 1, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1616554746/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_cMLbAb16ZHCF1 Witcher Volume 2, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1616557931/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_eNLbAbH3ZAFP8 Witcher Volume 3, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1506701612/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4NLbAbGDJ125D

If you really want to start from the very beginning, read the books first:

https://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/wiki/index#wiki_books
https://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/comments/3qm8p9/so_you_want_to_read_the_witcher_books_guide/

There's also the compendium: http://www.amazon.com/World-Witcher-CD-Projekt-Red/dp/1616554827 -- which is chock-full of information to help you navigate the universe and the lore.

But you can play the games first, that's what I did, though I feel like I missed quite a bit of the backstory and the references. I played TW1 in 2014, TW2 in 2015, and just finished TW3 this month after playing for five months. And I started reading the books three months ago. You can jump into any game and enjoy it, but if you want my advice, start with the books and then work through the games. It's worth it.

Here is them on Amazon in English, where they are really expensive. But, I'd recommend trying a site like eBay beforehand, I got mine there in Polish for only $10.

They come with all the standard cards for Nilfgaard and the Northern Realms and their leaders as well as non faction cards, such as Geralt and the weather cards.

u/SP1DER2000 · 1 pointr/witcher

i got mine from this ebay seller, when it was on discount. The delivery costs can be pretty high though depending on where you live

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Andrzej-Sapkowski-Witcher-Series-8-Books-Collection-Set-Season-Storms-NEW-/273830132540?hash=item3fc18c3b3c

You can also get it on amazon if you live in a area where they deliver. you do need to get season of storms seperately if you want that one as well.

Technically you can purchase it now, but it won't be available until 11/30. I bought mine on Amazon, but I'm sure you can find it on other sites as well.

  3. Blood of Elves
  4. Time of Contempt
  5. Baptism of Fire
  6. Tower of Swallows

Season of Storms is an upcoming book set in between the short stories of The Last Wish. It will be released in English on March 2018.

Give "The Last Wish" a go, if the first couple of short stories about the White Wolf don't grab you, so be it and have a good day sir :) but it might just make a reader of you yet ;)

Amazon has The Last Wish in full size paperback. I ordered it, also saw a Blood of Elves full size paperback. But it wasn't prime.

The Last Wish:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0316438960/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apis_1505528345357

Blood of Elves (have to click the new and used link. A few are selling new.):

This might already be happening. A "special edition" re-release of TLW has been scheduled for September for some time now. Amazon lists it as a regular paperback, not a mass market paperback like the older edition. So if they reprint BoE next, the whole series will at least be in the large print edition.

Here's The Witcher Library Edition Volume 1 on Amazon. I recommend going to a bookstore for the other books though, to be sure you can get them all matching. If you are into that anyways. If not, they have this set and you'll also have to get Season of Storms if you want them all.

u/OneIcyBoi · 2 pointsr/witcher

As mentioned in the title I got them as a gift. But just searching witcher book series online gives me results similar to the books I got as a gift. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Witcher-Andrzej-Sapkowski-Collection-Baptism/dp/912359795X

u/hobosox · 2 pointsr/witcher

Preordered on Amazon (I live in the US). I don't usually preorder things, but the art style of the Witcher games is a big inspiration for my own art, so I can't wait to get my hands on this.

u/Dairgo · 3 pointsr/witcher

Agreed..... both can be had for $10.18 USD.... get both, and enjoy the updates, they enhance the game greatly. you will not regret your decision to get the game.... though you may regret decisions made in the games.

Also... get the books... The fan translations and the ones on kindle/amazon (The Last Wish, Blood of Elves, The Time of Contempt )

For the correct order in which to read:
Witcher Wiki

u/BaileyVT · 2 pointsr/witcher

There's an additional 32 pages in the "Surviving As A Witcher" portion of the guide, an additional intro section entitled "Gwent: A Game of Cards" (goes over game basics and all cards), etc.
As for Main Game content, it seems to be exactly the same. What I meant by being more in depth (poor word choice really) was that it had more content and delved deeper into the game in regards to the DLC. Unfortunately, the entire art section from the C.E. release is gone.

""Amazon 3rd parties have them starting at $19 + $3.99 shipping." Is that the hardback edt.?" Yeah... here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0744017211/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_new_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1472796629&sr=8-1

>THE VOICE OF REASON 1
>
>She came to him towards morning. She entered very carefully, moving silently, floating through the chamber like a phantom; the only sound was that of her mantle brushing her naked skin. Yet this faint sound was enough to wake the witcher – or maybe it only tore him from the half-slumber in which he rocked monotonously, as though travelling through fathomless depths, suspended between the sea bed and its calm surface amidst gently undulating strands of seaweed.
>
>He did not move, did not stir. The girl flitted closer, threw off her mantle and slowly, hesitantly, rested her knee on the edge of the large bed. He observed her through lowered lashes, still not betraying his wakefulness. The girl carefully climbed onto the bedclothes, and onto him, wrapping her thighs around him. Leaning forward on straining arms, she brushed his face with hair which smelt of chamomile. Determined, and as if impatient, she leant over and touched his eyelids, cheeks, lips with the tips of her breasts. He smiled, very slowly, delicately, grasping her by the shoulders, and she straightened, escaping his fingers. She was radiant, luminous in the misty brilliance of dawn. He moved, but with pressure from both hands, she forbade him to change position and, with a light but decisive movement of her hips, demanded a response.
>
> He responded. She no longer backed away from his hands; she threw her head back, shook her hair. Her skin was cool and surprisingly smooth. Her eyes, glimpsed when her face came close to his, were huge and dark as the eyes of a water nymph. Rocked, he sank into a sea of chamomile as it grew agitated and seethed.

Ugh.. forget it. This will take forever. The rest is here: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Wish-Introducing-Witcher/dp/0316029181 and then there's more.

If you looking for an answer for your teacher to defend your work you could say "witcher" is a neologism (new word) created for a fantasy work just like the word "hobbit" was once.

You could add this link:

https://www.amazon.com/Last-Wish-Introducing-Witcher/dp/0316029181

... to show the word passed revision by professional editors.

> A few people have had questions about the book Season of Storms. It is a new Witcher book and was released in 2013 (14 years after the release of Lady of the Lake). It takes place in between the short stories of The Last Wish. It is currently only available in Polish, and the fan translation is not yet complete as far as I know.

Not true. It is available in German, for example.

u/jerfdr · 1 pointr/witcher

Actually Season of Storms is already officially translated (and for quite some time) into at least Russian, German, Spanish and Czech, so it's a bit of misinformation when you say that it's only available in Polish.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your efforts in creating and maintaining this guide!

Edit: now speaking of this, what do you think about maybe extending your guide to cover other languages apart from English? E.g. providing links to where it's possible to buy the books in at least some of the other major languages, such as German, Spanish and Russian?

u/WhiteWolfWhispers · 41 pointsr/witcher

You can buy the bigger size (paperback vs mass market paperback) of the Last Wish. It was released this past July.

Still waiting to hear if Blood of Elves is going to be released by itself or just only in the box set, coming out in October

u/Killl_face · 1 pointr/witcher

I was able to find it at a Barnes and Noble a few days after it was released. But in case that isn't possible, you can find BoF right here:

This one

I really like them too :D

If you plan on buying it, there was a version for almost 10€ cheaper 3 days ago so you might wanna have a look for that though

Knowing where you are from would certainly improve finding the answer to your problem.

Otherwise

  1. Eight, the first one you should start with is The Last Wish.
  2. Depends on how fast you read. For me it takes about a month to finish one book, but others read books in matter of days.
  3. There are some misinformation in the translated versions, but in the end they serve the purpose.

I'd also like to add if you're in the EU, you can actually get the first 7 books for £25.
u/varchord · 1 pointr/witcher

If you want to know about witchers and world in general then read this and this first

If you want to know more about events and characters present in games (Ciri, Zoltan, journey mentions in B&W) read Witcher saga from Blood of the Eles onward as said here

The number of ad personam remarks in this reply makes me doubt you finished your teenage times, at least when it comes to mental maturity.

I will show you the same thing as to the person below, it's a representative number of The Last Wish books sold in an international shop over Amazon.

Guess what? After the release of games, the sales increased from fivefold to tenfold, when compared to the peak sales from earlier years. When you compare it to the number of sales in 2014, your argument becomes laughtable.

You can get the European print paperbacks. They have darker coloured and considerably less flashy covers than the US ones. Finding them locally might be a bit of a pain if you're in Canada or the US, but if the covers are a major enough point of contention for you, they can be bough off Amazon UK.
