Just to be clear, lie detector tests aren't admissible as evidence in many courts, and aren't seen as effective.

I have been a Woody Allen fan for 30 years, since seeing Sleeper on TV when I was 16.

I recently bought a box set (great value!) and have been working through all his early films, about 20 in all.

I've been struck by how often he refers to child abuse, molestation, etc, for example saying half the nation are molesters, or in Annie Hall he says his character never had a latency period, and then imagines a young girl being "into leather".

I just watched one the other night, and saw it contained a line I'd remembered but didn't know which film it was from, Hannah and Her Sisters:

> Mickey (Allen): I read Socrates. You know, this guy used to knock off little Greek boys; what the hell's he got to teach me?

This joke could be read two ways, and one of them is that Woody's character already knows how to abuse children, and doesn't need any help from Socrates.

Elsewhere in the film:

> Gail: Child molestation is a touchy subject...
> Mickey (Allen): Half the country's doing it!
> Gail: Yes, but you name names.

Many, probably half (10), of the films I've watched have some line or relationship in them which is dubious.

Allen certainly has a type. The similarities are clear with his first wife Louise Lasser, Diane Keaton, Mia Farrow, Charlotte Rampling, Marie-Christine Barrault, Sigorney Weaver, Barbara Hershey, Meryl Streep, Mariel Hemingway, etc, etc.

Allen writes brilliantly for women, and his male characters are often obsessive about high-cheekboned, childlike, open and innocent faced women, who need an older man to mold them and teach them, to encourage to take classes, etc, etc. Which is exactly what Woody did with Soon-Yi.

I know all of this is circumstantial evidence. It doesn't sit right with me. I still love his films, but there is something at the heart of Woody's real relationships, and on screen characters, which is somehow twisted.
