IR Blasters are directional Infrared Radiation (IR), a spectrum of light that's mostly invisible to human eyes but the Wyzecams can use to record its surrounding in the dark. In other words, video recordings in the dark, look like clear, bright, daytime, black and white scenes.

These light sources use electricity but it also has sensors that turn "on" the light when dark, and on average illuminates about 12 hours everyday depending on its installed geographic location. The longer its light is on the more money it takes operator - but it makes a huge difference for video recording when installed correctly.

With the Wyzecam and sensors triggering the Wyze smart outlets that now controls my IR blasters, it only turns on as needed, which reduces the energy cost, by my guesstimate of 99%, which translates ruffly into $18.92 savings per year for my current energy rates of 27¢ per kWh on Oahu.

I have been using this light fixture with no failures or operational issues.

My biggest lesson with IR blasters was that the light source cannot be too strong or the details get "washed-out" like a person's face. How the IR blaster is aimed takes trial and error to get it right for each installation but the results are worthwhile.

There's a better way: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Wyze-Indoor-Wireless-Detection-Assistant/product/B076H3SRXG?context=search

OP, this is probably the cheapest they will sell them for. If it's your first time I recommend jumping on the deal if you're planning to spend more than $25 for the free shipping. But if you're unsure then I'm sure it's possible we will see a $20 deal on Amazon again.

Also, if you live near a Micro Centre you can pick up their own branded SD cards super cheap. For example, a 128gb card costs $12.99. I use their 64gb card and have several months worth of clips stored on it.

u/confed2629 · 2 pointsr/wyzecam

For your sdcard question, I am using the 64GB Sandisk listed here for $20 each. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B073JYVKNX/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've been told the 128GB works too but I have not needed that much storage since I am not using continuous recording, just event only.

Since I am not doing the continuous recording and all cameras will have a different amount of storage based off of the activity near them, I can't answer your time question. I will say that there are multiple threads/posts around here detailing the timespan associated with 32 vs 64 and some have 128.

Hope that helps, these cams are good for the price and feature set.

u/mightyarrow · 1 pointr/wyzecam

First, describe your planned mounting location as it pertains to weather exposure.

Covered? Not covered? Temps?

There are "weatherproof" enclosures/housings out there but none of them are truly weatherproof since they require holes for cables, don't have sealant rings, etc.

I bought these for my setup and it seems to work fine so far. Full disclosure it has not yet rained and I installed them 2 days ago, and they are under an overhand alongside some floodlights. But the reviews on Amazon indicate they work well.

If your setup involves being quite a ways back from the nearest overhang, you may not even need an enclosure.

u/jcann0n · 1 pointr/wyzecam

It does a pretty good job. Lights up my whole living room. If its not enough however you can help the cam by getting more IR LED lights like this one.

u/Shneaky · 2 pointsr/wyzecam

I'm having the same issues with my recently purchased pans. 3 cameras in various rooms throughout my house, the IR alone barely penetrates a few feet into the dark. In my kid's rooms they leave nightlights on, so it's not an issue. In our playroom though, I ended up putting my old FosCam on a shelf, and plugging it in just as a supplementary IR illuminator. It has far more IR lights and it lights up a large playroom like a christmas tree. I'm loving almost everything about the Wyze cams, but a little disappointed in the apparent weakness of the IR lights. I'd definitely suggest checking Amazon, they have some cheap IR illuminators that could help.

This one has decent reviews and is mentioned to work great with Wyze cams. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZYG89D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_aG80CbEE00161

u/AWooeCbUZFLCrurUyIA8 · 1 pointr/wyzecam

not so much. Been using one of these Wyze Cam Pan Protective Case. I do have it outside but under a roof, so it isn't directly out where water can hit the top of it. There's quite a bit of rain around me and I think this thing has been doing well. Do note (if you care to wait) that according to the Wyze CEO (in a recent email) that they are planning on an outdoor model soon.

u/atvking · 1 pointr/wyzecam

This is pretty much what I did:

  1. Wyze Cam mounted to soffit using this mount with USB power cord run into attic vent
  2. USB plugged into to ethernet adapter (not this exact one but same idea)
  3. Ethernet cord run accross attic and down wall into basement
  4. Ethernet adapted back to USB
  5. Adapter plugged into a 5000mAh cell phone powerbank for battery backup
  6. Powerbank plugged into wall using included Wyze Cam power brick.

I'm using a 32gb class 10 micro sd (can't remember the brand) and so far everything has held up great in a Canadian winter. We've had all kinds of different weather from rain to ice to snow (and lots of it)! Temps ranging from 15 celsius to -25 celsius.

u/sgorneau · 1 pointr/wyzecam
  1. Yes .. these and I love them https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G732B9J/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  2. Nope! And this past summer I've been through 100°F days, full sun, 60MPH winds, sideways 3" rain storms ... and now this winter -20°F nights, snow, ice, rain .... rain that then flash freezes.

  3. Each exterior camera is mounted to window trim. The included USB cables running through the window to an outlet nearby. The flat cable makes this practical because it doesn't interfere with the window weather stripping.

  4. a) Mounted to first story window exterior trim, covered front porch b) mounted to second story window exterior trim looking down at driveway, enclosure fully exposed to elements c) mounted to second story window exterior trim looking down at pool, enclosure fully exposed to elements d) mounted to wall in garage

  5. Patriot 32GB SD in each for all-time recording, sending clips to the cloud. Waiting to hear about RTSP to make a decision on the upcoming storage device. (really, really hoping for RTSP)
u/tydygy · 1 pointr/wyzecam

Do you have a protective case similar to the one in the link below on it? I had the white one and it looked almost exactly like this at night. If not, possibly just a very near by source of reflection? This looks like IR back scatter and based on the case I used, they are pretty sensitive to it. I first painted the case flat black, which resolved the IR issue for me short term. I eventually replaced the case with black ones that do not have the flap on the sides, as that seems to be where the reflections was mostly coming from. If you do not have a case on it, look for anything that is close to either side of the camera that might be reflecting the IR light. If not, I suspect one of the IR LEDs is misaligned. Maybe a defective unit?

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GCX831T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: to fix spelling and to say that I do NOT recommend the linked case, especially not the white one if you plan to use IR for night recording. Spray paint all flaked off in a couple of days.

u/shmoe723 · 2 pointsr/wyzecam

I added a couple IR illuminators to handle the after dark lighting for my cameras and actually turned off the IR from the Wyze cams themselves. They aren't any good for outdoor illumination. Not knocking them for that, as I knew that when I purchased. But a couple ir lights like these Tendelux 80ft IR Illuminator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZYG89D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8QvYDb1AF74CG. Do a great job of lighting the areas my cameras cover. There are many cheap options, just recommending one Inknow that works. You don't have to mount it next to your camera, if that's inconvenient, just where you want the night vision to be lit up.

u/Casey_jones291422 · 1 pointr/wyzecam

Just as an FYI I was able to order one of the V1 models from amazon canada, last month. it was ~$37 with taxes and shipping from this link

It's not active right now but hopefully they start selling again once V2 is out.

u/WeirdyMcLurkface · 1 pointr/wyzecam

Lots of cheap & easy options like u/Freedom95 referenced: https://www.amazon.com/slp/light-socket-to-plug-adapter/gmtayufhb75x6de

More expensive all-in-one option if you don't have room for your USB charger in the light fixture: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EPC102A

u/mailmeoffers · 3 pointsr/wyzecam

Using these in all 4 of my cams. Great quality for the $. Despite what others have said - do not opt for cheapest option. Flash memory (SD cards, SSD, etc...) have a finite number of read/writes. If your cameras are configured for “Continuous Recording” you’ll burn out the cheapest cards in a month+.

  1. Yes using an enclosure. See my set up here. Link go Amazon mounts I ordered. They are not water proof but help keep water off. I mounted under eaves to help.

  2. No issue with elements. Has been -32F air temp and -55 WC and no issues.

  3. Powering by using a light socket to plug adapter (last photo in link above).

  4. Attaches under eaves. I have 2 cameras mounted outside one at each door.

  5. Using Samsung Evo 32 GB SD card. 32 GB IS max it can take I believe.
u/heathvs · 1 pointr/wyzecam

I use a 64gb card and all I had to do was go into the settings under 'Advanced Settings > Local Storage' and hit the 'Fortmat' button. It now recognizes 59.4gb as memory available and records everything normally.

btw, mines a Sandisk Ultra 64GB Micro SDXC UHS-I Card if y'all are curious.

I have tested with 10 foot and 6 foot extender with success. I purchased these back in 2013. Nothing special about them though, at the time of purchase they were half the price they are listed at now. I also purchased a 25 foot cable that I use to run outside.

Ask on their subreddit r/openipc. this subreddit is for wyze cameras.

>Did I read it wrong, and I just made a donation? I'm fine with that and supporting good software, I just thought I was getting an SD card to simply install into the camera.

except you arent supporting the software, https://github.com/EliasKotlyar/Xiaomi-Dafang-Hacks is the creator of the v2 software, openip just forked the code and sells the sdcards. if you wanted to support the actual devs of the software then you should donate to the people who do the actual coding of it.

its also crazy you are willing to pay $16 for a 8GB sdcard when you can buy a 64 GB for $20 https://smile.amazon.com/Sandisk-Ultra-Micro-UHS-I-Adapter/dp/B073JYVKNX.

u/mblaser · 3 pointsr/wyzecam

> But why?

If you want to put the camera in a place where you don't have a power outlet, but do already have ethernet. Or even if you don't already have it, ethernet is much easier to hide or run through walls than an extension cord.

I already have ethernet run to my camera locations outside my house, so if I didn't already have a PoE NVR camera system, I would be using that PoE to place Wyze cams in those spots. If this thing ever breaks, they're all getting replaced by Wyze cams.

And as for adapters, this is the sort of thing you would use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079D5452Z/

Outdoor cam is in testing phase. Wyze says it's still on track for release before the end of the year. Be aware that the outdoor cam will certainly cost more. Wyze employees have said it will have battery/usb power options, PIR motion detection and have a wireless indoor hub. For direct information anyone can search for wyze employee posts on their outdoor cam roadmap thread.

You might want to just get a outdoor case for your cam. I have this one out in direct sun, rain, snow, no problems. Most protective case I've found after searching all over. If you can place your cam right under an overhang, I've seen many people say they do perfectly fine with no case.

u/MSpender · 1 pointr/wyzecam

No data, and no PoE support from Wyze.

But you can use these to do your own PoE to them.

  2. I have not lost one to the elements and we've experienced -30F wind chills, ice, and snow.
  3. Via a long USB that is carefully hidden behind the gutters and landscaping.
  4. One is mounted under the roof soffit above the garage and the other under the roof of my back deck.
  5. I have 32GB microSD cards in the cameras.

I am using 128gb samsung sdcard formatted through the wyze app. Its been a month now and working fine so far. I am using motion recording. Time will tell how this non endurance card holds up for motion. Tbh I probably should of got a 64gb high endurance samsung card for the same price. I think the 128gb is overkill for motion.

So in terms of an international distributor, they just allow Amazon to handle it?

Unfortunately, Amazon AU lets just say is fucked https://www.amazon.com.au/Wyze-Indoor-Wireless-Camera-Vision/dp/B076H3SRXG

Amazon US does ship to Australia, works out about $50 a unit though.

Will definitely look forward when you will be able to handle international orders or at least match your price on Amazon.

  4. All placed under roof eaves, though I did seal them with silicone & put a mesh screen on the bottom hole (read reviews on product page for more info)
  5. Samsung 32GB EVO MicroSD Card & it's set to continuously record & events to cloud. Been using them for 4-5 months & no issues. (Well, if I record from the timeline the audio is usually out of sync, but that's actually a firmware issue)

I would not suggest doing what you are doing, because voltage drops with the length (resistance) of the cable. This will result in the camera getting less than 5V, and it may try to compensate by drawing more amps, which is obviously not good.
