The day I discovered finishing needles was one of the happiest days of my life. (Plus I kind of cheat by leaving the tail long, weaving in a few inches, and then snipping the last couple inches off.)
If you want to get ridiculously rigorous, you can get knitting for anarchists. It was one of the coolest presents I've ever received.
