The United States has something called the Emergency Alert System.

The TL;DR is that all radio and television broadcasting stations are required to have equipment that can listen for those Emergency Alert sounds. Those sounds are actually digital data that carries information about what alert is going out and what counties the alert is for. If the equipment hears an alert for the county it is in or the county that it serves, it will automatically hijack the radio or television broadcast and relay the emergency message.

Us citizens can buy consumer versions of this equipment as well, they are advertised as S.A.M.E Weather Radios (Specific Area Message Encoding).

Here is a very popular one for $30

Here's a video showing it in action

Because of how large the United States is, it is recommended for US citizens to own one of these, so that they can automatically receive any emergency messages for their specific area.

It's one of my favourite films because IMO it captures the hacking mindset. It doesn't matter if it's technically accurate, spiritually they are in COMPLETELY the right place, it came out when I was only 3 years old so I saw it much later (about 12-13) when I had already gotten into hacking and computers but I felt instantly connected. Wargames was similar but I think hackers is a step above. I haven't really found similar films since then but there are some good books ('Dear Hacker' is one of my favourite because it has a huge amount of perspective)

I admit you have a point, but rather than entertain my fallibility, here's a convoluted explanation of why I'm still technically correct:
"2001: A Space Odyssey" indeed only used the first section of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (called "Einleitung, oder Sonnenaufgang"). However, if you look on the LP containing the soundtrack (pardon the small image), the song is referred to as "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Furthermore, if you look on the LP from the Portsmouth Sinfonia (pardon the even worse smaller image) you can also barely make out that they called it "Also Sprach Zarathustra".

Pedantry aside though, I just wanted to convey was that this music wasn't composed for "2001: A Space Odyssey" like many people think, but instead comes from an independent work that well predates the film.

There's a book called Predictably Irrational that talks about studies in human behavior that's related to this. The idea is that we have a certain set of mores for social behavior and a separate set of mores for business behavior, so you get irrational behavior when you cross from one to the other.

For instance, they sold starburst candies as an experiment. As expected, sales went up as price went down, until they became free. Then people took only took a one or two, because it was now a social transaction, not a business transaction. But if they were a penny a piece, people felt free to drop a dollar and take 100 of em.

Dude, Haribo bears are the shit.

Also that's only sort of right. It's fruit flavored candy but they're advertising that it's made with real fruit juice.

This seems to be the spear you're talking about but I can't find the video on it after looking through all of their videos, maybe they took it down.

The amazon page for the video has some comments with more context, if anyone else was as confused as I was. https://www.amazon.com/Ten-Thousand-Points-Light-Anniversary/dp/B0042DN4VI
