The Last Bastion of the Living: A Futuristic Zombie Novel

Loved this book. Its on Amazon and Audible.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1475206313?pc_redir=1396424118&robot_redir=1

The Bastion was humanity’s last hope against the fearsome undead creatures known as the Inferi Scourge. A fortified city with a high wall, surrounded by lush land rich with all the resources needed to survive, protected by high mountain summits, and a massive gate to secure the only pass into the valley, the Bastion became the last stronghold of the living on earth. But one fateful day, the gate failed and the Inferi Scourge destroyed the human settlements outside the walls and trapped the survivors inside the city. Now decades later, the last remaining humans are struggling to survive in a dying city as resources and hope dwindle. Vanguard Maria Martinez has lived her whole life within the towering walls of steel. She yearns for a life away from the overcrowded streets, rolling blackouts, and food shortages, but there is no hope for anyone as long as the Inferi Scourge howl outside the high walls. Her only refuge from the daily grind is in the arms of her lover, Dwayne Reichardt, an officer in the Bastion Constabulary. Both are highly-decorated veterans of the last disastrous push against the Inferi Scourge. Their secret affair is her only happiness. Then one day Maria is summoned to meet with a mysterious representative from the Science Warfare Division and is offered the opportunity to finally destroy the Inferi Scourge in the valley and close the gate. The rewards of success are great, but she will have to sacrifice everything, possibly even her life, to accomplish the ultimate goal of securing the future of humanity and saving it from extinction.

Thank you so much for this incredibly thorough reply! I love all of these suggestions! Your replacement on the water filter and light seem solid.

I especially love the ResQme suggestion. Pulling together some Zombieland advice with a useful item is an awesome idea!

I'll definitely add these to my shopping list!

The Zombie Autopsies is being adapted into a movie by Romero. Pretty good book - has great potential to be a great movie under Romero, even though his latest films have sucked hard.

Another movie that could be cool is Day by Day Armageddon, though maybe it might be a better tv show. Just as long as it isn't done by the people doing TWD.

Is there any place I can watch this on demand aside from amazon? http://www.amazon.com/Days-Gone-Bye/dp/B004A8EI9M

Can't find it on FIOS, Netflix, or Hulu, just Amazon. I'll pay this time but if there is a legal alternative, I'd love to hear it.

edit: Don't do what I did. The experience from Amazon was so bad I contacted customer service to ask for my $5 back. Utter shit.

edit2: Ended up using the Zune Video On Demand from XBox live. Great quality, easy navigation.

Now I can say that I like Walking Dead very much.

edit3: Amazon apologized, refunded my money, and said they'd look into the issues. They also included the disclaimer that he only reason I was refunded was because they were unable to provide the service I paid for.

If you need a book to help Proper care and feeding of zombies is a good book, it has good description of different types and how they move and stuff

What did that picture have to do with your question?

But, to answer your question (if I didn't already have a fully packed bag), if I had a minute or two before I had to flee I'd grab my backpack and pack it with (and my answer will not include things already packed in my BOB, just regular normal stuff here in my apartment)...

Peanut butter

Tuna fish

Can opener

Tylenol

Caffeine pills

Ephedrine

Contact case, contact juice, all my extra contacts

the glasses they issued me in boot camp

2 pairs of socks

2 pairs of underwear

1 pair of the pants they issued me in boot camp (mine are slightly different than the one in this link. No drawstring, they have the typical zipper and button like normal jeans and typical front pockets found on jeans)

my Dad's old Navy cold weather jacket he was issued in the 70's. (Very similar to this but without the hood. I'd secure it to my backpack with the straps on the bottom made for a tent or sleeping bag.)

Leather belt

the knife they issued me at my first duty station

the largest Nalgene-style water bottle I own, filled with water

Several bottles of water

Flashlight, extra batteries

Ear plugs

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide

Pocket magnetic chess set

I have a large and light weight hiking backpack, I've fit a cube shaped 36-pack of beer in it with room for more. And of course, I'd walk out the front door with my two melee weapons in hand: a homemade mace/baton and short sword.

really? awesome. if you like zvr

Didn't see it in here, but I've recently been enjoying the hell out of the "Mountain Man" series by Keith Blackmore.

Link on Amazon

Great action, great humor, and the main character gets his ass handed to him as often as not. Plus it's a story that recognizes that, after civilization goes to hell, toilet paper will be more valuable than gold.

u/ScarpaDiem · 1 pointr/zombies

Hammer gets stuck.

The Cold Steel Crusher is quite possibly the best melee weapon for zombies. Won't get stuck, won't break, not too long/short. Really though, a blunt weapon around 2 feet long is probably the best bet.

u/Birdabir · 0 pointsr/zombies

This definitely seems like something that could lead to zombies. Makes me think of the book The Zombie Autopsies.

u/chaoskitty · 2 pointsr/zombies

I'd add this short story collection to this list: New Dead

and also Brian Keene's City of the Dead. Not the most eloquently written novel but it is easily the goriest I've ever read.

u/Sapiens_Ursus · 3 pointsr/zombies

You must be in college - your spelling is atrocious ;)

Nice comic though. Have you read Zombies vs. Robots?

u/ExtraGravy · 3 pointsr/zombies

FYI - It is actually $1.99 on Amazon. link

Zombie related: The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger Ma. The Walking Dead By Robert Kirkman. Zombies(http://www.amazon.com/Zombies-Record-Infection-Don-Roff/dp/0811871002/ref=pd_sim_b_13) by Don roff

Survival Related: The SAS Survival Guide, The Ultimate Sniper by (Ret.) Col. J. Plaster, The Emergency-Disaster Survival Guidebook.

I know it's not a book. The Colony is an interesting watch if you ever get some time to sink in information.

u/Skeetronic · 2 pointsr/zombies

I'm surprised Zombie Haiku didn't make it.

u/Lynda73 · 2 pointsr/zombies

A friend of mine had this book and I read some of the stories. One that really creeped me out was called "The Summer Place" and (SPOILER) it had animals that were infected. Specifically deer. Maybe because they are herbivores, they didn't try to attack.

Reminds me of Mars: by Ben Bova every time I see this.

You can pre-order the third one here. There was also a short story released in the 'Origins to Exile' compilation book.

The Living Dead 2 anthology has a great short story in it on just that subject.

The Zombie Combat Manual

I've not read it, but it is on my wishlist, I figure it's probably along the lines of The Zombie Survival Guide linked earlier.

The [Sawyer Mini water filter] (http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP128-Filtration-System/dp/B00FA2RLX2/) is smaller, can be screwed onto standard disposable plastic water bottles, and is capable of filtering far more water since you can reuse it. If you pick up a [stainless steel water bottle] (http://www.amazon.com/Klean-Kanteen-40oz-Classic-Loop/dp/B0093IRPSA/), you can boil water in it as well.

You should always have a backup when it's a survival situation; [Israeli water purification tablets] (http://www.amazon.com/Taharmayim-Israeli-Water-Purification-Tablets/dp/B0077TB65U/) will both look legit and be legit if she actually needs to use them.

There are always more items you might add to a first aid kit, but [this one is pretty well rounded] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Weekender-Kit/dp/B000G7YIL4/). If you want a cheaper base kit (i.e if you want to add your own items), [this other kit] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Tripper-First/dp/B0033B4I9C/) will also do the job.

Battery-free lights can be good, but AA batteries are common enough that a [good tactical light that takes AAs] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006O4CELO) might be a more convenient option.

If she has a tablet (if tablet, go for the 12W) or E-reader (7W), [solar power might be an option] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3LPODY). With [rechargeable AA batteries] (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BK-3MCCA8BA-Pre-Charged-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B00JHKSN5I) and a [USB recharger] (http://www.amazon.com/SunJack-Battery-Charger-Ni-Mh-Batteries/dp/B00PZ6V99U/), the flashlight and any other AA device (like a [small, separate radio] (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-S10MK2-Pocket-Radio-Silver/dp/B00020S7XK)) could work indefinitely, as well as any regular USB-charged device.

[ResQme] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IE0F12/) may not be strictly zombie-related, but if you buckled up as per Rule #4, you may want a way to quickly exit your vehicle if your seatbelt jams and the windows and door won't open normally.

There are a lot of compasses out there, but [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Suunto-SS012063013-A-10-Compass/dp/B000FEXZGW) is simple, reliable, and won't break easily. It's also designed to be laid over maps without getting in the way of reading them.

[Pocket chainsaw] (http://www.amazon.com/Chainmate-CM-24SSP-24-Inch-Survival-Pocket/dp/B0026OOS60). Won't be useful against zombies, but if you ever needed to cut a tree or thick branches and don't want to carry an axe...

...You can also carry a [hatchet] (http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-78506935-X7-Hatchet-14-Inch/dp/B0002YTO7E/) instead. This one has a short blade, which will cut into their heads and not get stuck like others. It'll also do a fine job cutting smaller branches.

For non-zombie/woodwork related tasks, the [Victorinox Forester] (http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Grip-Series/dp/B003EH82TC/) has your bases covered.

You should also include World War Z (the book, and the movie if you'd prefer), I Am Legend (both the book and the film), and the Walking Dead series (TV, comics, and both seasons of the Telltale game series on Steam).

Personally I believe the Cold Steel Indian War Club would be a most effective Zombie killing weapon.

Assuming you could sidestep the 'cone of doom' being the hands and mouth of a zombie and can land a successful blow, it'd destroy a zombie skull.

Cold Steel also makes a bat. I feel the bat requires too much room to accurately swing and with such a large surface area the impact would be too spread to be very effecting for anything more than smacking a single zombie in the head in the middle of the street.

The club's spike however focuses that initial impact into a smaller surface area increasing the likelihood of a critical impact all in a weapon designed to be wielded with one hand. The spikes initial hole in the skull would weaken the surrounding skull allowing the club to finish it's job in fewer impacts than the bat.
