When amped they sound slightly more detailed in the low end and moderately more detailed in the high end. It's not a huge difference, but slightly noticeable depending on the source. I can't distinguish amped vs non-amped when listening to EDM, but with more layered music it seems to help.
I bought this 3rd party replacement cable and removed the outer-mesh/plastic sleeving (quite a meticulous job) to reveal the red cable underneath. The build quality is fantastic on this cable; I like the coiled strain relief and how it fits into the proprietary connector Sennheiser used.
Oddly enough the main reason I switched the cable was the original coiled cable was creating some strange humming/interference when I amplified the headphones. When I stretched out the coil the noise would disappear, which leads me to believe the extra amplification going through the coil was generating some type of current or interference. The new cable sounds completely clear when amped.
