They sell sew-in magnetic snaps (for bag closures etc - like this one ) which are round magnets sheathed in plastic or standard magnetic snaps which can have four rings on the outside that you can attach like a hook and bar. The one which has a backing and you push the prongs open, I wouldn't use. In my experience they stress the area you want stressed the least (the hole it's pushed through), and this can cause problems when you pull at the snap to release them.
I wouldn't recommend using tape on the surface, because the snaps are pretty powerful and you could rip the snaps off. But if you want a quick and dirty way of doing it, mark where you want the snaps to go, tape it down and then machine stitch a square around the sew-in.
