For long trips, I cannot recommend highly enough purchasing a wireless hard drive (similar to the Seagate Wireless Plus which I've personally got: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Wireless-Portable-Mobile-Storage/dp/B00AZIRNP2) and loading all your movies/ TV shows to that instead. It'll keep your iPad free for all other media, and allowing you to have much more choice on your travels. It allows multiple connections also, so if you've got any travel companions then they can take advantage of it too.

As for games, I can suggest the following:

  • Plague Inc.
  • FTL
  • TIS-100P
  • Papers, Please
  • Lux DLX
  • RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic
  • rymdkapsel (yes, it is spelled correctly)
  • First Strike
  • Spymaster
  • Her Story (less of a game, more of an interactive film)

Edit: Just a final thought, if you haven't done so already get an Apple Pencil and a decent colouring book app. Great way to relax and it passes the time nicely. One that I personally use is Millie Marotta's Colouring Adventures

This seems to do the job for most people, thinking of investing in one myself.

Honestly, if you plan on using the additional storage device on a constant basis, then OTG is not really worth it. Try some of the Wifi storage options that will work with all your current and future devices.

Pick one depending on your storage and mobility needs.

It depends what you will be using your iPad for, really. I have a 32gb iPad 4 and it suits me down to the ground. 16gb would be too little and 64gb would not have warranted the extra expense of circa £100 for me. I use my iPad above all else for consuming media content and just for general browsing of the internet. There are a few solutions I have tried out for playing movies/TV shows/music without having to have it all stored locally on the device.

  1. Air Video, StreamToMe etc. Apps like this, available on the App Store, enable you to stream movies located on your computer/laptop through your LAN straight to your device.
Pro's - You don't have to have the movies stored and filling up your internal iPad storage and these apps are AirPlay compatible,
Con's - You have to have your computer/laptop running when you want to stream your content this way.

  2. Purchase a wireless hard-drive. I currently own a Seagate Wireless Hard Drive (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Wireless-Mobile-Device-Storage/dp/B00AZIRNP2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397981781&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate+wireless+1tb). It has a 1TB capacity that holds all of my movies and TV shows which enables me to keep my (fairly extensive) music library all on my iPad itself.
Pro's - You can take your media library anywhere with you. You don't even have to have an internet connection to be able to play your content. The hard drive creates its own WiFi which your iPad can connect to. It has a battery life of around 10hrs (according to Seagate) and you can also download films to your iPad from the hard drive. For eg, on an aeroplane, you might not be able to use your Seagate Wireless' WiFi capabilities so you can download to the device a few movies before take-off and delete when you have watched them, and then rinse and repeat. No computer, no iTunes needed. It's also AirPlay compatible.
Con's - It's hard to find any except for the fact that it only plays iPad friendly video file formats (ie. mp4, m4v).

The Seagate wireless is the best option in my experience and the decision between paying £479 for a 32gb or £559 for a 64gb iPad Air doesn't make sense when you can go for the Seagate for £129 for a 1024gb extra!! I also own an Apple TV (along with two others in the house) and both of the above solutions work great for playing movies straight to the TV wirelessly through AirPlay. It makes life far easier for me as I can download new episodes of Game of Thrones and more or less straight away, play them on the TV in full HD!
