I am stocking up my "med bag" for nursing school, and this is, to me, the coolest item that goes into a med bag. I am most interested in emergency medicine, and, really any medical situation that requires quick response. Penlights are used as diagnostic tools to check the pupil's response to light. Failure to respond or slow response is indicative of a neurological problem (e.g. stroke, brain injury).

However...
this is sort of expensive as add-ons go, and I don't want to be greedy. I was going to post an alternative item, but it is almost as expensive, so I will just sit back and see how it works out. :)

  • Zebra .5 mechanical pencil. Not sure of the model (the number got rubbed off from usage), but I've had this pencil for over 6 years. The SAME one, and it's still going strong.
  • 3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. - THE LIGHTEST steth you'll ever wear. I've tried the cardiology 3 and various others, but after wearing them for >5-8 hours at a time, your neck starts to hurt. With this one, I have to check to see if I'm still wearing it at the end of the day. Yes, there IS a slight difference between the 3 and this one in terms of acoustics but to me, it's not worth the $100 markup and neck pain.
  • Zippo Regular Matte Pocket Lighter - I don't even smoke, but being able to create fire on the spot is what separates us from the animals, right?
