what makes you think it was fucked up before colonialism?

it does a good job of detailing western and central Africa during the slave trade but before colonialism. one of the main takeaways is Africans exhibited huge influence and power over their relationships with Europeans, which is in contrast to how most people assume they were completely dominated by Europeans from the get go.

I'm sorry for my tone of voice, it's just that I used to browse stormfront a lot and not to be offensive again, your post reminded me of their logic.

I can't back this off with a source because this is what I learned in a college level world history class taught by this guy and a lot of what I'm saying comes somewhere from this book

what I do know is that the average american back then was too poor to afford a single slave, so when you see numbers like 28% of blacks own slaves, there is probably something else going on not being taken into account such as wealth.

EDIT: So therefore your statement

>my only point here was that, when given the choice, a surprisingly high percentage of people oppressed by an unfair system were willing to cooperate with it.

isn't proved true by the fact that 28% of blacks chose to cooperate with a system that oppressed them. You need to look at the wealth of blacks who could afford a slave but chose not to, and look at the wealth of white people who could afford a slave but chose not to.
