Generally, I think it's pretty bad idea to wear traditional headphones.
That being said, I recently picked up some bone conducting headphones that are open air, so they don't block your ability to hear the world around you. If you're going to do it, this is a pretty good way to go.
Agreed completely, and I don't listen to music while riding, however a reasonable alternative would be bone conduction earphones at a lower volume. You can still maintain situational awareness, and listen to music.
I bought two pairs of these when they were on for $30 a piece. They're incredibly useful actually, I've listened with my ears submerged in the tub too.
A bluetooth speaker would be a bit obnoxious I think.
