I’m in the same boat. Step-son (16) called out my thumb being all damaged/bloody and that was the final straw. I’ve been trying to stop off and on over the last 6 months. This is my longest streak of not doing it and I feel like it’s at the hardest point because new skin is growing under the damaged dead skin which is making the old skin very in my face. It’s sharp, dry, catches on things and a bit of an eyesore. I’m pushing through it though, for the most part.

One of the things that’s helped my the most is if I do lapse and bite, I spit it out. I don’t want to give my brain the reward it wants. And if there’s a particular finger that is more desirable to bite I put a bandaid over it. Also use lotion at least twice a day. I use this stuff because it feels less greasy then other lotions and generally feels pretty pleasant on my hands/fingers.

It’s been 2 weeks since a major biting session. I’ve had a couple picking sessions (finger nails scraping at cuticles), but they were very short lived and only on 2 fingers (thumb, index). I stopped after that.

There’s no right way to go about this, just be diligent and try to be hyper aware of when you do it and stop yourself. One bite on accident in a day is still significantly better than giving in to a whole session. Progress is progress. The more you’re able to not do it the easier it gets though (for the most part).
