Some things that my little one has enjoyed that range from free to not so free:

  • Putting tissues/blocks/anything he can't choke on in a box and letting him pull them all out. You stick them back in and repeat.
  • [Tobbles Neo] (http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Brain-Toys-FA070-Tobbles/dp/B0078A8HH8) is a great toy. It is perfect for him to pick up and hold on his own. We can stack them for him and he can knock them down. Or he will pick up the individual pieces and examine them. They are very easy to stack so little ones with minimal coordination can stack them as well. All the older kids that I've had at my house still pick up this toy and play with it. So it is not free, but I think it will be a lasting toy.
  • With supervision - my kiddo loves to get lost under a muslin blanket. He will figure out how to pull it up on his face or off his face. Or he likes to see it floating down around him. Roll around in it.
  • A wooden spoon or baby bowls and dishes. All of these things are his size and he loves to pick them up and examine them. Easy and fun.
  • Board books - they are thick enough that he can't cut himself and he enjoys just smashing them around and flipping through the pages.
  • [ALEX Jr. Play Cube] (http://www.amazon.com/ALEX-Busy-Town-Wooden-Activity/dp/B004LL0VV2/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1426621230&sr=1-1&keywords=alex+activity+cube) is fantastic. This is probably a bit outside your criteria, but my 7 month would play with this non-stop if we would let him. He loves to pull up on this and play with the bead maze on top or roll around to the different sides and whack all the moving parts. It isn't cheap, and I wish it had a big base so he could pull up on it with out us holding on to the other side. I went out on a limb with this at Christmas, but it has been a huge hit. I also think as far as children's toys go it has a pretty design. It isn't your run of the mill plastic monstrosity.

    I hope this helps some!

I’ve been obsessively researching toys for our first birthday/Christmas. I’m all about toys that serve multiple purposes and can be used for a couple years and through multiple children. Here are some ideas I have came up with...

activity cube - there are all sorts of different models and brands depending on budget.
Radio Flyer Walker Wagon
Hape Scooter

Pikler triangles look awesome, but they are a little out of our budget. I might see if my husband can build one though.
. pikler triangle

We are also looking at getting some high quality wood blocks - but they might be a little old for right now. Maybe for second birthday.

board books, the standard wooden 'ring stacker' toy, plastic 'links', a soft ball (4 inch diameter? ikea has a great soccer ball this size!) and a sit/stand activity block (https://www.amazon.com/ALEX-Discover-Busy-Wooden-Activity/dp/B004LL0VV2)

all are things my LO still plays with at 16mo!
