I've had both types of cases and I don't think it makes much of a difference either way honestly. I do, however love my magnetic case that turns the Kindle on and off when you open/close the case.

I think that the cover is the first (and only) accessory you should purchase for your Kindle. There are hundreds of covers available, but I think that Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover is a really solid cover that most people like. The price was $32 just a few days ago, but is at $40 now.
In addition, I picked up one of these covers ($30) for a friend's daughter on her birthday, and I was impressed by the build of it. It feels really sturdy, and has an antique feel to it. However, it does not feature the auto-on/off when you open the cover, which the aforementioned Amazon cover has.

That's what I use, and I love it. Bit expensive though, but I always found it worth it.
