Nothing is worse than scarring your credit report for years due to this. It will take her at least 5 years to have good credit enough for a car, an apartment, and a credit card without a ridiculous interest rate.

  1. Have your gf obtain copies of her credit reports from all the bureaus to prove the loans exist and then have her freeze her credit reports.

  2. If her Nmom is still on any of her bank accounts (such as an account she opened at age ~16), have her transfer all the money out of that account into a new one and lock down her bank accounts. Have her create strong passwords and impossible to answer security questions. If she wants extra protection, have her call her bank and set up a security pin or phrase to prove she is calling and not her Nmom trying to gain access to her accounts.

  3. Call the police and report the identity theft. Identity theft is one of the most common crimes in the world. They will ask your gf for proof of the loan, have her provide what they want to prove the loan exists and have her explain that it was her Nmom who did it by using her SSN.

  4. If the police make a report, look into lawyers, especially if you know her Nmom is smart enough/capable enough to try and fight this. Even if she isn't, a lawyer is a good resource for legal advice.

  5. Contact the credit card companies and loan company and have her explain the situation, that her Nmom used her SSN to fraudulently open accounts and racked up debt and explain to them that she is not responsible. A lawyer at this time would provide loads of help.

  6. This is my personal tip: have her rent a P.O. Box at the post office and get all of her mail rerouted to the Box. They're inexpensive, something like $40-$100 per year. This will stop mail from accidentally showing up at her or her Nmom's place for her Nmom to steal. Also, if her Nmom steals her mail, that's another crime. If your gf wants to keep her documents secured at all times, I bought one of these at my local Job Lot for cheap, it looks and sounds silly, but I have every piece of important information in that safe and both keys are on my person at all times.

  7. This should be included in #1 but have her contact the Credit Bureaus as well and explain that the derogatory mark(s) on her report are from fraud.
