Let me again suggest that you try the Potter book. Of course there are lots of other reputable authors also. I also really enjoyed this DVD set for instance.
I am not a historian, so my opinion is not worth any more than any other person's on these matters. But I will observe that the going to war was done by the seceders (is that a word? :-) ) not the Federals, and that Lincoln was careful to make emancipation a war measure, a matter of military necessity.
