You might want to read Angry White Pyjamas by Robert Twigger. Not a monastic life, but he trained with the Japanese riot police. Its a good read and gives you a slightly more realistic view than Kill Bill.

That's a little too close to home for internet anonymity but if you read Angry White Pyjamas, I train with one of the teachers mentioned in the book and have done seminars with most of the other teachers named in that book.
