I put one of these up with the button on the wall behind me and the receiver in front of me. It works really well to avoid being poked, which I really dislike. I added a sign that says "Headphones on? Push button to get my attention."
Well, velour pads are supposed to be less isolating than pleather. I guess you could give something like these a shot, at $10 it's worth a try. But don't expect miracles – if they were capable of letting in a lot more sound they'd also change the way the headphones sound, and you may not like that.
Have you considered changing your doorbell with a model for the hearing impaired? You can place the bell unit closer to you, and they also have a light.
