Wireless doorbells are fairly cheap and easy to install. Use a command strip so you can take it off without damaging anything.

Hello! This sounds like a stressful situation for you, so I have a couple of suggestions that may help you gain some control again. I saw another commenter suggest a gps watch. I think that is a great idea. I suggest getting him something like this watch. I suggest presenting it as a gift, and not a punishment tracker. A gift he will hopefully cherish and want to have on him all the time. You will hopefully not have to resort to using it, but it would be a great tool if you wanted a piece of mind or were unable to locate him. And as for the sneaking off I would simply install these on his door and windows. I think that he may be taking off to test his boundaries, or maybe he has a desire to adventure a little bit. Maybe you could start going on walks with him after dinner or whenever you may be able to spare 10-20 minutes. I hope some of these things can help you get some piece of mind :)

Ring 2 is battery operated. It can be charged off your existing doorbell, or just pull the battery out and charge via USB. Ring says battery will last without charge up to 6 months. I'm guessing that's generous. If you go the battery only option you'll probably want to throw a chime in so it can be heard in the house.

I don't get the weird information in this thread. This particular door chime is still manufactured.

The reason it was so well hidden is because a previous homeowner didn't want to mount it on the wall where it could be seen. The current for the doorbell is low voltage 12v DC. It is usually supplied by 18 gauge wire. The step down transformer is usually installed in some utility closet or attic with the 18 gauge wire going to the button and the chime.

There is nothing particularly old or unsafe about the door chime or where it is installed.

This is a door and window sensor that sends a push notification to your phone every time the door changes states. It looks like it might require a hub to operate though. Could possibly communicate with a smart home device like Alexa or Google Home.

This one is a standalone light and sound sensor. It lets you set the volume and tone anywhere from friendly greeting chimes to loud alarms, as well as change the color and flashing patterns on the light.

I put one of these up with the button on the wall behind me and the receiver in front of me. It works really well to avoid being poked, which I really dislike. I added a sign that says "Headphones on? Push button to get my attention."

u/webdevbrian · 3 pointsr/homeautomation

I got one of these about 4 years ago and it has worked flawlessly (mine worked up to 600 ft! I put it on the second floor of my house by a window facing the mailbox)

  1. Alexa buttons, connected to a routine maybe? Not sure if a routine could play a chime, but maybe play a song/sound...
  2. Just go low tech, forget about using all your echos as chimes and buy an inexpensive battery operated doorbell with remote chimes like this one for instance:

I was going to suggest this. You or someone in your home is sleepwalking. Or someone in your home is playing a prank on you.

Get a door lock like this or this and a door opened chime like this.

Does the wifi reach the woodshop?

You can get an ESP8266 and use Arduino code to program up a few buttons and a door sensor for <$20.

Actually, just searched for "IoT garage door alarm" and you can buy premade solutions for just a bit more.

Thank you so much for your response, super appreciate it. I've been leaning towards the doorbird as it seems to be the most comprehensive option I can find within our price range.

My one remaining question question would be if you might be aware of an alternative to the doorbird door chime that might be a bit more cost effective than $150? This would be so that we can all hear the doorbell ringing during the day.

Yes, I understand how the box opens. I would use a tilt switch to turn the device on and check for mail. It wouldn't have like, exposed wires hanging out everywhere. It would just be a small box in a nice case that sits on the bottom.

There are commercial products that do the same thing, so I'm kind of hoping that if I give it a nice professional and discreet look it shouldn't cause any problems.

> but are you saying there's sensors like that but the output ('sound') can be set near me or something?

Yup, that's exactly what i'm saying. Something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Fosmon-WaveLink-51004HOM-Wireless-Operating/dp/B01CIYQUBS/

Up to 110 db should be plenty loud I would think. :D

Thanks.

The technician guy recommended this itemfrom homedepot, but I am not sure how to wire or anything home repair.

So my idea is to just forget about everything and just put two ring plug-in doorbell chimeand connect with wifi so it can ring when someone push the ring.

In order to do so, what should I need to do?

u/kare_kano · 1 pointr/headphones

Well, velour pads are supposed to be less isolating than pleather. I guess you could give something like these a shot, at $10 it's worth a try. But don't expect miracles – if they were capable of letting in a lot more sound they'd also change the way the headphones sound, and you may not like that.

Have you considered changing your doorbell with a model for the hearing impaired? You can place the bell unit closer to you, and they also have a light.

u/TheMUGrad · 1 pointr/arduino

You can buy a wireless doorbell system with LED mode for pretty cheap.

I used these two and they work pretty well together. Also I can add whatever sounds I want to it.

Here you go:

Record 5-20 sec of .mp3, and make it your doorbell . Change the song/sound whenever you feel like it. Now you can have a nice guitar sound if you want one.
