Just as a followup, headsets don't have to be expensive to be functional. This headset from ASA is only $110. I don't know how great it is, or whether it'll last, but it'll certainly get you through a checkride.

If you want a vintage headset, you could always pick an aviation one, although you'll probably be getting terrible audio quality, non-standard 1/4-inch jacks, and mono sound. There's... kind of a reason people don't use actual vintage audio equipment.
