That's no netbook, it has an i3!

If your SSD is 7mm you should be in good shape for a replacement.

The cheaper $399 variant with a Pentium might be good too. You lose hyperthreading, some L3 cache.

Uh, check the price of the pink version. It's like $440 instead of $494.

Edit: edit: see my other reply!

I completely agree with most people in this thread. Get a small Laptop, not just screen size wise, but also pay attention to the actually weight. You will have to carry the laptop around probably most of the day, so pick something with good battery life (possibly with a removable power brick - as in have a backup power brick, that way you dont have to take the cable with you all the time).

I actually had a 15" gaming laptop that I carried around everywhere. It was big, heavy and completely unpractical. I realized pretty fast I wasn't gaming on it, just doing presentations, taking notes, watching movies and shows. I sold my big laptop and went for a really small entry-level Asus Ultrabook with a 13" screen and low weight/size form-factor. I decided between these 3:

[Asus Vivobook X202 Laptop] (http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Touch-Laptop/dp/B009F1I1C4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371391929&sr=8-1&keywords=vivobook)

[Asus Vivobook S400 Ultrabook] (http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-S400CA-DH51T-14-Inch-Touch-Ultrabook/dp/B009F1JL5A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1371391929&sr=8-2&keywords=vivobook)

[Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook] (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP530U4C-A01US-14-Inch-Ultrabook/dp/B0082PZ0LO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371391951&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+ultrabook+series+5)

I eventually went with the Vivobook S400. I had the Samsung S5 and the first unit was broken on delivery, the second developed pixel errors within a month of using it. I stuck with the Asus. It has a removable power brick and doesn't have too much bloatware on it. I like it very much for my use. But the monitor problems I had with the Samsung could be coincidence. The Asus has a very glossy monitor, if you aren't into that the Samsung should be better.

Good luck and alot of fun at USC mate.

OK, I was you a year ago. Wanted a non-Mac laptop for lawschool. I went with the Asus X202-E because it was cheap, basic (bought it at a Microsoft store bloatware-free), and had good reviews. One year later and wish I had invested in something else. Their customer service sucks (had to replace a power adapter through my warranty and it was the biggest pain in the world), and the computer has been very buggy lately since the 8.1 windows upgrade. Maybe Asus has better laptops in the pricier range, but the one I got blows. Had about 4-5 good months with it, then everything went downhill. Will probably need a new laptop in less than a year. Advice: invest more now so that you don't need 2 laptops over the course of law school.

Sup Ryan?

  • This is the most expensice item on my wishlist. I don't expect anyone to ever purchase it for me, which is why I'm saving $ to buy it for myself!

  • It's on there because it's been so long since I had my OWN computer.. I use my fiance's and I can't count on him to keep my files safe. The last time he wiped his computer to start fresh, he forgot to put my stuff on the external and ended up deleted ALL of my sons baby pictures. Every last one of them. I could have puked.

  • Of course I'd be okay with never ever having the laptop.. it's just a computer after all :P

  • Annnd now I need to go listen to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds since it's stuck in my head.

I have an Asus Vivobook. It runs civ on low pretty fine. The start-up time is really long, but once it gets going I have no complaints. I love playing Civ touchscreen with it, and the price isn't too bad. (It was about $70 cheaper when I bought it a few months ago).

Do you run any special software on those cruise computers? if you do a chromebook is not the solution for you.

it all depends on the budget, but i would say something that runs windows and has a 13" screen tops, bigger than that is too big, i would suggest an 11" one.

try something along the lines of the Asus x202e or a lenovo yoga 2 11" these are two laptops with a good processor for its size (run a core i3) there is also the lenovo yoga 11e that runs on a weaker processor a celeron N2930, these laptops are good choices all three of them have a touch screen they are not expensive, they are light and really portable with their 11" screen.

So now I have to revise my show and tell!

[This] (http://www.amazon.com/CowboyStudio-30-Inch-Photo-Soft-Light/dp/B001TKCZVM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2F0ZKIG7ZVCL8&coliid=I3TVRTC2WR2OW9) will be the next thing I save for to help me with my Etsy shop.

And then [THIS] (http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Touch-Laptop/dp/B009F1I1C4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=BVG50JB9A21R&coliid=ITPP5FVUJ8WUZ), I really need to replace my work laptop that exploded and is only mildly working right now... Trying to write all of my reports on a laptop that doesn't work is frustrating!

If you want a similar laptop with a better CPU take a look at this Asus X202E. The i3 CPU is just way better than any dual core AMD CPU. Furthermore you would get better battery life with a Intel iCore than with a AMD one.

u/aflowerysong · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Also, while above your stated price range, this vivobook has a better processor than both the laptops that I mentioned, has a touchscreen, and at time of writing, starts at $376.70 used from warehouse deals (on the black model): http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Touch-Laptop/dp/B009F1I1C4/

And this one is $399 new, also has touchscreen, also better specs than what I mentioned above: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-X202E-DB21T-11-6-Inch-Touchscreen-Laptop/dp/B00CWISC5I
Not sure about their battery life or removable batteries, though, or how important that is to you, OP. Finding a free outlet on campus is a joke and I'm not near one at all while on the bus and the like, so I've found that having a battery that lasts a few hours pretty handy.

And as far as windows8/touchscreens go, honestly I just use start8 and desktop mode, but if you're interested in using the metro interface of windows 8, a touchscreen may be appealing.

u/nope_nic_tesla · 1 pointr/GoodValue

My mom got this laptop from ASUS. It's super small and lightweight, but comes with an Intel i3 Ivy Bridge chip and 4GB of RAM so it actually is decently powerful. It's also a touchscreen so that's nice too on Windows 8.

Depending on whether or not you are looking for portability, which I can't tell from your post, you should check out anything in the Asus Vivobook series of laptops. Here are a couple:

Looking for some portability but not too worried about it (also has a disk drive, so there's a plus if you need it):
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-Laptop/dp/B00F0RDX3O/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419194601&sr=1-3&keywords=vivobook

More portable, no disk drive:

Most portable, least performance (but still respectable), and cheapest (I own this one and am very satisfied with it personally):
http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Laptop-VERSION/dp/B009F1I1C4/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419194601&sr=1-8&keywords=vivobook

I have this:
http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Laptop-VERSION/dp/B009F1I1C4

(price was about same, but in €. you know, that 1€=1$ thing sellers do)

overall I'm very happy with it. But I have to remind myself every now and then that it's not supposed to be a gaming laptop, and that I actually have a real gaming PC.

I bought it because portability was a true concern, since it was an upgrade from an EEEPC701. I didn't feel like starting to carry a weighty laptop around. plus, hardware-wise, it was a GREAT upgrade. but it was never meant for gaming... the thing is that I'm too stubborn to not try it every time I go on vacation. heh, skyrim worked great. but it was winter, then. lol. also, I have played many (oldish) games on it. just, not in summer.

eeepc specs: celeron @900Mhz, 512 Mb ram, intel GMA915, 7" screen. I was SO proud of it... (it worked really great even with those specs).

u/drswnemo · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Transformer Book is alright, but its specs are kinda poor and you won't be able to do much. Instead of a detaching screen, the ASUS Vivobook is just touchscreen, but with a Core i3, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 500 gb HDD.

The Transformer Book is going to be about half a pound lighter than the Vivobook and probably a better battery life of around 5-6 hours real usage versus about 3-4 on the Vivobook, but the Vivobook is better performing with more storage.

Hmmm, I was going to get this laptop (the 4 gig ram version $299) primarily to run Ubuntu 12.04 or 13.04. Buuuut, I was going to attempt to dual boot Windows 8. You think this is a bad idea?

Would I be better off getting the x202e (touch version with i3 processor) for $430, wipe it, and put 13.04 and Windows 8? Thanks for your advice!
