If you don't think you'll need a 2 in 1 or touchscreen, my best recommendation would probably be the HP Envy 13 for $700. It has some very decent specs with a new kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of ram, a 256gb SSD, and intel HD 620 graphics. It has intel HD 620 graphics which is fine for light gaming, but may struggle with anything more demanding than skyrim (even skyrim is only playable on lowest possible settings). It also weighs in at 3.06 pounds, has an extremely long 16 hour advertised battery life, and a 1080p IPS display.

The Asus Zenbook Flip for $560 is an amazing 2 in 1 laptop for general users, but may struggle with more demanding tasks. It's got an intel core M processor, 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd. It is lightweight at 2.9 pounds, has a full 1080p touchscreen display, and an extremely long battery life. It only has HD 515 graphics though, which will struggle with even moderate gaming (still able to handle light games fine).

If you want the most power, my best suggestion is the 2 in 1 Lenovo Flex 4 for $770. It is the only option with a dedicated graphics card that will allow for more graphic intensive programs / gaming more easily. It has a new kaby lake i7 processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd, and AMD R7 dedicated GPU. It also has a 1080p touchscreen display and a pretty long battery life, but is heavier at 4.6 pounds.

You will not get a 13-14 inches laptop with a quad core processor within your budget or anywhere close. This ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T looks very good for what you do. It has the Core m3 8GB DDR3 which is almost as good as the latest generation i3 processor. This laptop all round is very decent, having an 8 GB RAM and fast 256 GB SSD..It also has a decent battery life and nice sleek design. If you are not against refurbished laptops, this Acer Aspire V 13 would be an option with a better processor in an i5 6200u.

If all you care about is processor speed, and even light gaming, for the money, this is an excellent opportunity. This $280 price used to only exist for used Lenovo 310s, and at release this laptop cost $450 new. So if you're under a strict budget of ~$300, get it. It's also one of the lightest "cheap" 15.6" laptops out there.

If you have more money to spare, try going for the Acer E15. Reason is, it has a better screen, a non-fucky shift key, and better battery life. You'll feel better using it, even though the specs are practically identical.

Here's my personal story:
I started out looking for a ~$300 laptop, and even ordered this without opening it first so I can return it full refund just in case while I continue looking for something that would check off my needs/wants/wish list better. It's just that crazy of a deal.

I kept looking, and I've always wanted a laptop that looks "nice", has a nice looking touchscreen (to see what all the hype is about), is in the weight range of my stolen Acer C720 (2-3lbs), runs Windows, and has decent enough oomph while still acting as a secondary laptop to my main pooter.

I eventually bought the Asus Zenbook flip, last generation, for ~$500 in "like new" used condition. Here's the one I got:

Good luck with your searches! As a general tip, my workflow for finding a laptop is thus:

1. Define your budget.
   
2. Don't be stingy with your budget if it will get you something you think you'll largely enjoy. You'll be using this all the time after all.
   
3. Value is not only present in specs, but with the user experience as a whole. Screen color gamut, track pad jankiness, I/O ports, speakers, and keyboard feel are more important than you'd first think.
   
4. Go out if you can and physically use the laptops you want to buy. You won't always find the exact model, but the same chassis are used with different processors/ram/memory configs. Use this opportunity to test if you like the screens, track pad, keyboard, weight, and looks of the product. This will also help you define what you really want out of a laptop and introduce you to some models you may have not payed attention to before.
   
5. Define what you'll enjoy when you use your laptop. That will give you filter criteria for what you're looking for. Everyones needs are different. Hone in on the single component that is the biggest differentiating factor for your enjoyment and needs, then compare secondary specs between candidates.
   
6. Enjoy the process.
   
7. Don't be afraid to scroll past the first results page on Amazon. I've found some very interesting things this way, including this deal.
   
8. Use video reviews to understand qualitative aspects of a laptop and see it physically in the real world.
   
9. Use Passmark or Geekbench score repositories to gauge relative processor strength. Just Google the processor name followed by "Passmark" or "Geekbench". Gauge the price vs performance ratio as you go in your head, it's faster and easier this way.
   
10. Don't forget to check Newegg and Best Buy for open box and refurbished deals if you've found "the one" but it's still a little too expensive. I saw an Acer E15 that goes for $350 on Amazon for $294 refurbished on Newegg.

here are several good options within your budget, like the Asus flip since that is what you wanted or Acer Spin or Acer Aspire R 14 all are great options that comes with similar specs and similar price point, they come with 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, very good battery life, and are within your budget.

I bought this for $499 on amazon about a week ago when it was discounted, but upon further research, found it again for the same price.

I got it on sale for 550 a few christmases ago though. Amazon lists it at more now.

I dual booted Ubuntu onto it, which you may also want to do if you're a mac guy (I'm not, but Ubuntu beats Windows for coding work easily). Although I do also have a larger computer in my apartment, the one I listed is just for traveling. If it's going to be your one and only computer, you may want something physically bigger and more powerful. I mostly just code and transfer the codes to my lab's supercomputer so I don't need any more power than necessary to load big text files.

I recently picked up the Acer Aspire R 15 2017 for ~$495 after tax at Bestbuy off a slickdeal that was going on. Im kind of having buyers remorse as im seeing these quadcore i5 laptops some even with dedicated GPU's (which isn't by any means necessary) but would be nice to have and I figure I could pay $100 more for quad care and potentially get some gaming out of it too I would.

Size wise I like it, im a college student but I wouldn't mind a smaller 13" laptop but still want to keep the 2-1 and touchscreen aswell as the 1080p IPS and SUPERB aluminum build quality and feel. SSD isn't an issue for me since I plan to replace it with my 250GB samsung 840 evo anyway. I still got till next-next Wednesday to decide wether to return or not and to see what else comes up. Im scared this dual core i5u processor wont hold up for the next 2-3 years which is why im looking into the quadcore lineup. Lighter would be nicer too around 3-4lbs if possible and gaming definitely isn't needed since its for college and I already have a gaming pc at home.

So a 13", 2-1 1080p IPS, quadcore i5/i7 (maybe or dual core? IDK), 8GB ram, HDD or SSD is ok (since ill be upgrading), longer battery life and nice build quality is what im looking for . Something on the lighter side. At most looking to spend $600.
Sorry for the long writeup but i've never really shopped around for a laptops until now. Also im assuming used and refurbished laptops bought on amazon come with no warranty? Also something with a nice feeling trackpad with good scrolling. Is lenovo good for these?

Also how does the Intel Core m3-6Y30 Processor compare to the i5 7200u or the like i5's?

Honestly? If you want a PC Buy the cheapest one which probably has a 128gb SSD, a core m3 processor, and 4 or 8 GB of RAM. This day in age, you don't need much to run windows and you'll be able to play plenty of games. Anything Indi and 2D or low end 3D stuff and older pc games. And I'd go for a flip for shits and giggles. How about this one? It's like $600. A little pricey and you might be able to find a cheaper model. I personally owned a UX303. It had an i5 and 8gb of RAM. It was great. Until the hinge gave out. But that happened after I gave it to my mom

For Chromebooks what about this?. Still kinda expensive though. As for games, Chromebooks also run Android apps so you'd have access to play store games and emulators. Running Linux would give you access to more but I don't think you'd want to do that

seems like this one looks nicer but the spin has better reviews. also seems like pretty equal specs

I've got two recommendations. One is heavier, but comes with better graphic processing capabilities. Generally speaking, any digital media editing is going to require at least some kind of heavier weight to it, as that editing requires the use of a dedicated GPU (Graphics card), which tend to be quite heavy. Additionally, the combination of an SSD and a heavier GPU is going to drive the price up to your higher limit, unfortunately.

All of the below are within the upper limits of your price range, but they all meet your listed requirements. Between the three, you're really choosing between Lighter weight, or better video editing. The Acer gives you the best of both worlds, with a dedicated GPU and only weighing 5 Lbs, plus its still within your price range (if only just barely).

The other two are just as viable options, but you will run into some limitations when it comes to video editing capabilities - namely in the software it can handle, and how long it will take to process/render the final product.
