Not bad, I like the airy feel to it.

One suggestion - Replace the black foam panels with something like this. They come in different sizes.

I wonder if sound deadening panels could help with this! The walls are pretty bare as is, and the ceiling looks fairly high (though that could just be an illusion)

I guess I see this going two ways: you add the sound deadening panels and recalibrate your receiver, and you're happy with the Fluances.

If you're not happy, the sound deadening panels make the next speakers sound even better. You don't have much to lose!

EDIT: If you're not about that DIY life, I found some plain acoustic panels here and some more hip-looking ones made out of coffee bean bags! They can be done DIY if you're so inclined. But it will make a big difference. Less for the receiver to try and process and much better sound (it should be much less boomy, which seems to be a big complaint of yours)

Placement seems like a bit of trial and error but this image through some basic techniques. You can always buy more down the road if you're dissatisfied.
