I've had this one for a couple years and I'm really pleased with it. Obviously it's not really redneck engineering, but I thought you may be interested.
For it to be safe, do this ^/s
Biggest issue with oc'ing laptops is heat, and it'll build up quickly since the components are in such a small space. You can do it, but for it to be considered safe, get a laptop cooling pad. I have this one and it kept my old laptop pretty cool when I used it (I didn't OC of course).
Even then, I'd only overclock it a little, not like you would in a desktop.

Definitely! In fact, if you're going to be using it as your primary driver and doing heavy duty gaming or CPU intensive tasks, I would highly recommend a cooler mat to help lower noise and extend the life of the case fans. Here's a link to the one I have:
AVANTEK 15"-17" Ultra Slim Laptop Cooling Pad Cooler 2 Quiet Fans Laptop Chill Mat with Dual USB Ports and LED Lights
Got this thing today https://www.amazon.com/AVANTEK-Laptop-Cooler-Cooling-Lights/dp/B00L36CEYU
Lost around 5 degrees in idle, in games that ran at 75-80° around 8° XCOM2 runs with 70-73° now, demanding stuff like destiny 2 beta - around 3-5° it was at 87-90° before now its 84-86°
It certainly helps, maybe other cooling pads models are better, not sure if i keep this one and get another one with more powerful fans. The thing iv got is very silent on the other hand.
