I have this, and I like it a lot. It’s lasted for years and years, and the Xtava Black Orchid and Deva Fuser diffusers fit on it:

My only complaint is that the Low airflow setting is still a little aggressive. I wish it were about 20 percent gentler.

http://amzn.com/B000ASDGK8 BaByliss Pro BAB2000 Ceramix Xtreme Dryer, only $30. I am a pro stylist and I use this at home, just bought one for my mom today from Amazon. Super lightweight and quiet, it's a really great deal and seems durable.

You're going to get a bunch of different opinions on that DevaCurl dryer. It is a reputable and well-loved brand for sure, but it has a very nontraditional diffuser (the green thing on the end) that some people love and some people hate.

Personally, I use this hairdryer and absolutely love it, along with this diffuser, and am really happy with it.

Honestly, I do not think the dryer really matters as long as it's a decent brand. There really aren't any dryers that I've found that are specific to curly hair, the difference is all in the diffuser for me personally.

I've been using this shampoo and I love it! It's great for dry scalps and hair and adds a nice shine. Probably almost any moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo/conditioner would help.

Also getting a new hairdryer worked wonders. I don't know what you use to dry your hair, but I was using a cheap 20+ year old dryer and got one of these, and my hair dries a lot softer and shinier with it.

I'll second the babyliss, and I use it for white noise as well. Like hours a day when I'm programming. The black one

I just want to bitch about the random name of my blowdryer...babyliss. really? Thanks for the daily reminder.

If I remember correctly, I was told to always look for hair dryers that were at least 2000 watts. After a long hunt for my own first hair dryer, I went with the BaByliss Pro BAB2000 Ceramix Xtreme Dryer and it has lasted for years.

I think it's also important to make an appointment with someone (I really like Aveda salons, but they can definitely be pricey-- mine's usually around $90) and have your girlfriend get her hair done. Have them blow dry it with a thermal brush (especially if her hair is curly) so that she can watch and try to pick up on how to do it herself. It takes a while before the process is easy, but I don't know how I survived so long without learning this information.

Good luck!

I bought this one back in May, and it’s amazing! It gets my hair so silky and dry without making it feel like straw. 10 / 10 would recommend!
