I've found Badgemaster to be the ultimate in soluble stabilizer. She's probably using Super Solvy, which I found needs at least two layers to hold together for the entire design, Badgemaster's nice and solid, it takes just one.
A gift card to a place that offers classes like BurdaStyle, Craftsy, or University of Fashion would also be a great idea.
