I recommend staying away from talk radio idiots and following the team through the print media; I particularly like James Wagner of the New York Times in his baseball coverage. I also recommend learning about the sport through books and podcasts. Watching Mets games on SNY would also be a good way to follow the team on a daily basis.

• Watching Baseball Smarter by Zack Hample is a book that gives you a basic rundown on the sport as it is played.
  
  
• Faith and Fear in Flushing is a book by Greg Prince, a big Mets fan, who recounts the biggest moments Mets history from the early days to 2008 or so.
  
  
• You mentioned English football. Jeff Paternostro is a Mets fan and English football and wrestling fan who has a podcast, For All You Kids Out There, which covers baseball from an analytical and scouting perspective.
  
  
• One of my annual baseball traditions is picking up a copy of the Baseball Prospectus annual every February. Inside is an essay for every team and a short paragraph about every single player in the league.
