Honestly I'd look into PA speakers for this. They'll take the beating of being setup/disassembled way better than anything meant for home use, and you'll get a lot of output volume for cheap. The Behringer Eurolive B212XL and the larger B215XL speakers have a cult following on AVSForum for using them in home theaters too -- and they'd be perfect for use outside. Get two -- maybe 3, and a subwoofer, and you'll have a solid setup.
Edit: And get stands. Don't put speakers on the ground and expect it to sound ok. I went to an outdoor movie event where the organizers used (mismatched) PA speakers just sitting on the ground and we were up front. We got blasted with audio, but I bet the back row could barely hear.
The main goal for figuring out what will work best for you is identifying your budget (£250) and your objectives (house party), which you’ve done.
The best deal that you’re going to get will likely be second hand. A single Active PA speaker (amplifier, woofer, tweeter all built into the same unit) will be your simplest solution. As you start to turn the volume up on a PA system, the amplifier will work harder and the woofer will undergo more strain and the noise will start to distort, so ideally you want to get the most amount of power available for your budget, so that you can run the amplifier at a lower load. For example, a cheaper behringer 500w speaker running at 20% capacity will probably sound better than a nicer Yamaha 100W speakers running at 100%. Not always the case, but works for a general rule of thumb if you’re not in a position to A/B test multiple options side by side.
While second hand will yield the best deal, here is an example of a decent enough active speaker that will be plenty loud enough at 20-30% volume for the size of party you’re describing.

You will be fine running your system in mono with a single speaker. You are correct in that some depth and panning can be used by the producer or a dj, but not having a second speaker will not limit your ability to have a party or play good
Music in any significant way. Having a second speaker is just adding more power and placement for room. Once a bunch of people show up, a lot of the sound gets absorbed by the mass of the bodies in the room, and having additional speakers means that you can better match the volume to the size of the party. A second identical speaker will double your power output, and give you an extra 2-3dB over a single speaker.
In a lot small house parties, a second speaker can be used for as a monitor as well, and is ofte. A better use of the additional resource if your first speaker is loud enough. This way, one speaker can be turned way up and pointed at the room, the second can be dialed way down and pointed at you, the dj, so you can have clearly hear your mix

Pickup two of these, they'll get a basement bumping. Just don't red line them and they won't blowout.

I just bought these bad boys and they are AMAZING in my small home theater. 5 of the 215s and 1 subwoofer cost me ~$1,280.
I run them on my Denon S920W AVR and they sound amazing!

Here is a thread over on AVSForums where several folks have gone this route and been very happy.
Sure, they aren't visually appealing to some people, but the sound is truly stellar and in my dark home theater they completely disappear. Plus, you can always hide them in a baffle wall or build an easy frame with acoustic cloth to cover them up.
PSA: If you live in an apartment, don't do this. Get some awesome headphones instead. :-)
