For anyone who finds this kind of thing interesting, I highly recommend reading Black Thursday by Martin Caidin. It's about the second raid on Schweinfurt, October 14, 1943, one of the bloodiest bombing missions of the war. 60 bombers were shot down and 650 men were lost, most of them KIA. It's a gripping story. If you want to know what it was like, sitting in a turret in one of these bombers as the Focke Wulfs come diving in, it'll give you a pretty good idea.
