I bought this one from the Alexa github walkthrough; it worked like a charm.

Unfortunately RPi 2 and 3 are the only ones compatible for now. You can use the 3.5 audio jack for external speakers if you intend to run headless. Right now mine is setup at my desk, so I have hdmi hooked up and it works perfect.

I got this one for $2 but took about a month to arrive. Works well though.

Well I'm using a cheap USB mic from Amazon and I haven't had any issues triggering Alexa from across a room (15-20 feet), with small background noise (wifey talking, TV, etc.).

There's no doubt that the actual Alexa unit probably has some advanced hardware in it but I'm hypothesizing that most of the success is due to clever programming.

For my cortana, ok-google setup, I paired a Kangaroo pc with a usb microphone, works fine. Any audio going to the display is transmitted via bluetooth to more adequate speakers.

Thanks for the reply, you've given me some new ideas I hadn't thought about.

Edit: I tried one of these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IR8R7WQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and it works great. It slides right into the USB slot on the back side of the TV and you'd never know it was even there. From my main viewing location I can speak normally and it works just fine. THANKS!

If your Pi's USB ports are exposed, this USB mic works well and is less than $5:
