I use the Bollé Contour glasses, which are light, fairly stylish and impact-resistant safety glasses.

If you get ones with ESP lenses, they're very slightly amber tinted, which removes blue light from the spectrum and reduces eye fatigue when you're staring at targets for a while.

Everyone has already mentioned the usual stuff. I commute 6mi by bike on a £250 hybrid and it's fine. The main problem for you might be drying clothes before you need to use them again.

In winter I don't overheat at all. In summer it can get very sweaty. I can make do without shower facilities - winter I don't really sweat at all, and in summer I just shower before leaving. No pit bacteria = no smell.

In summer, if you wear a backpack, it will get uncomforabe quickly. Consider panniers - Ortlieb are very well regarded.

Keep an eye out on eBay for local 2nd hand bikes that you can use when yours is stolen, as it inevitably will be, unless you park it alongside more desirable bikes.

Also learn the modified Sheldon Brown lock method: one U-lock (Kryptonite New York, as short as is practical) between a solid immovable object + the frame + the rear wheel, and then a decent cable (or even another D-lock) going through the front wheel. I have my cable also going through the seat bracket, so people can't easily steal the seat.

For commuting in snow and heavy rain, you will eventually get annoyed with sandblasted eyeballs. Bollé is a very well-regarded manufacturer of safety specs.

For tyres to use during snow and ice, I can recommend Schwalbe Marathon Winter. The "Ice Spiker" tyres are overkill, unless you live somewhere that might get massive snow drifts. I used Marathon Winters during the recent snowy & icy period and they were fantastic. Bonus: pedestrians always hear you coming from 20 meters away

For summer tyres, I can only recommend Schwalbe Marathons. I use the Marathon Plus Tour - they have more tread, which perhaps (I don't know) might make it last longer. I use these guys for tyres: http://www.spacycles.co.uk - cheap.

Some people have two bikes, one for nice days, and a cheap winter beater which you really don't care if gets rusted out. Make sure you clean your drivetrain after you ride it on very salty/slushy roads - it will rust quickly.

You will also need two or three pairs of gloves:

1. Any thin-ish gloves, for summer & optionally use as liner gloves for 2) and 3). Never ride without gloves.
   
   
2. For winter, some lobster gloves. I use Aldi lobster gloves - they're great.
   
   
3. Waterproof + windproof gloves, for cold and wet days. I can recommend some large scuba gloves (I use "Gul flexor neoprene") combined with some fluffy inner gloves, as they can get cold and damp otherwise.
   
   Buy a chain checking tool and make sure you check your chain every few hundred miles and replace it if necessary, otherwise you will also need to replace the rear cassette due to excessive wear.
   
   Buy three replacement chains now. Label them 1, 2 and 3. Once you start to use #3, buy a new set of chains and a cassette, because at this point you will probably be due for a new cassette.
   
   You should also carry a spare set of cheap, charged front & rear lights just in case your main lights stop working.

Bollé Contours are great, comfortable, they won't fall off unless you try to make them, great price, clear, no fogging and I've shot them a bunch to test with a few different guns and they've held up fine.
