It's called a Boogie Board - it's an LCD tablet that allows you to do quick scratch work without needing to bust out a pen/paper. It's powered by a small button cell battery and the only time it uses that power is when it's 'erasing' the screen so the battery life is basically indefinite.

In our games, you'd fill up a card in a single combat. Probably go through several cards per session. Whereas with the boogie board, you just clear it after each fight, good to go.
I've seen this eWriter used for tracking numbers, and the stylus feels pretty natural. I haven't used it myself, but I guess it would be an option.
