I feel like i spam this a lot, but for those looking for a 1 cord solution for their 558-598 and other headphones with lock, you can try this:

Its been out for a few months, but hasn't really got much exposure.

u/severianb · 4 pointsr/xboxone

Same experience with the broken earcup dangling by it's wires.

Comfortable headphones, decent sound and a slick fold up mic. Flawed design.

My solution:

Get a universal boom mic like this.

And a regular headset with a detachable cord like this.

You can of coarse mix and match and get whatever type of headphone and microphone you like. But this way, you aren't stuck with just "gaming" headphones, which are usually a bit lower quality.

It's also a lot slicker than the ModMic people stick on the side of a pair of regular headphones.

Just an idea.

The Samson Go is better and cheaper than both the Snowball and the Modmic. It's also tiny, so desk space shouldn't be an issue. Just throwing it out there as another option.

Also, if you just straight up don't want a desktop mic, no matter how tiny, then you may want to look into this BoomPro clone that has a 2.5mm connector to work with the HD598, M50X etc. I personally haven't used it, but people seem to be pretty satisfied with it. I have an actual V-Moda BoomPro (which you could use with the HD598 if you use an adapter) and it sounds better than the Modmic in my opinion and is also more convenient. Not to mention the BoomPro route is also cheaper. Just another option for ya.

The Modmic is fine, but it's also overpriced and bit of a bother. I personally think the Samson Go or the BoomPro/clone option is the better way to go, unless specifically want a noise cancelling microphone. Neither the Go nor the BoomPro would pick up the sound of your keyboard more than your voice, but they'd still pick up the sound of the keyboard more than the unidirectional Modmic would.

this also exist:

plugs right into an HD 598 and bam, headset.

Audio technica m40x + boom mic is a solid combo. Will run you $97 + tax on amazon prime. Boom mic lists m50x but the connectors for the m40x and m50x are identical.

  • Reporting back. I love the Sennheiser HD 598 SE's. A lot lighter, comfier, and more open than the ATH-M50x. Returning them the next time an Amazon box is open nearby. It's my personal preference, but I love the HD 598's far more. I can also hear everything in my room as if I wasn't even wearing them. Don't be fooled either they have a good amount of bass themselves. The two downsides are that because it's so light it feels more flimsy than the solid as a rock M50x's and also I can't wear them in public without blanketing my surroundings in the quiet sound of whatever music I'm playing. If you plan on gaming with them then grab a pair of these as well as the 3 foot sleeved extension cable by the same company. The cord on those is painfully short.
u/ChiTownChronic · 2 pointsr/bose

Hello. So this mic wouldn't work? I was about to order this based off reviews that this cable allowed QC 35 to work w/ both PS4 and Xbox One.

u/materix01 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Could consider a ATH-M40x or Sennheiser 598C with this sorta mic.

u/argonian_ · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

it won't fit in the M50s because the M50s use a 2.5mm jack and their own interlocking mechanism. these have the 2.5mm jack and the locking mechanism though. not sure how good they are.

u/OverExclamated · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

How well do you enjoy using your m50x 's? Have you considered just buying a microphone to use with them for gaming?

u/thefrencharmy · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

m40x with the HM5 angled pads is quite decent.

Modmic 4.0 is not as good as the boompro mic, and is still pricey at ~$50.
If you are using the modmic 5.0, it'll work pretty well, but it's pricey at $70.

Instead, look into this mic that plugs directly into the m40x, without any mods, for $20. This mic's quality is slightly worse than boompros, but fits directly.

To use the boompro mic with the m40x, you can remove the locking mechanism and then buy a 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female adapter and voila, you can plug the boompro into them.

Zeos over at /r/zeos highly recommends the m40x, so take that for what it's worth

u/MrToken282 · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Awesome!! one more question, sorry! Do you also use the modmic, or another one, maybe like this one?https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Universal-Sennheiser-Audio-Technica-150CM-Black/dp/B01IRCRCL2?th=1

I don't really want to spend 50-60 bucks on a mic, so I was going to get the v-moda mic but apparently it doesn't work with the m40x's because of the jack that the headphones use.

u/good_one_dickhead · 2 pointsr/PS4

Audio Technica ATH-M40X or ATH-M50X. These are regular headphones, but the cable is replaceable so if you buy attachments like this or this you have a pair of headphones that will blow most headsets out of the water.

u/EmberVIII · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

All gaming headsets are bad for gaming. Just get yourself a pair of open back Sennheisers. They need a propriety mic though. Budget? Get a pair of Sivga SV007 and a V Moda Mic. As for an amp you can't go wrong with the FiiO Q1 Mk II. World of difference in sound through it.

You guys told me to buy a headset with an external mic instead of a cheesy gaming headset. So i bought this one.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IRCRCL2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But i dont know how to set it up. Any help?

u/Route66_LANparty · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

I use the HD558 with a Blue Yeti as my primary gaming comms.

I use the HD558 with this cable/mic combo (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IRCRCL2/) while on the go with LAN parties, or traveling with the laptop.

The HD558 are about as good a sound as you'll get right out of a computer/phone/MP3 player without the added hassle of a stand alone amp.

Thanks so much man! I was completely stumped because of the stupid proprietary locking mechanism. Right now I'm in the process of building a PC and as such do not have money to use on mic for my desktop.

For voice chat a headphone mounted boom mic is ideal since the sound you get won't change if you move your head. The Antlion Modmic series is nice.

You can get an inline boom mic too, can be a bit loose though and swing around. https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Universal-Sennheiser-Audio-Technica-150CM-Black/dp/B01IRCRCL2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1502839335&sr=8-4&keywords=2.5mm+boom+microphone

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

Any kind of desktop mic would work :P

I have read good things about the Ketdirekt Boom Mic.

I'm using one of their 3 button speak easy cables with my V-Moda XS. The cable is reasonably well made for the price and works pretty well. Mic quality is ok ofr voice chat and ingame banter, but don't expect to be recording podcasts with it.

u/ActionFlank · 1 pointr/PS4

598s can have their lock modded to accept a standard plug. Alternatively, another redditor pointed me to this, which accommodates the lock.

You don't have to mod anything to get the modmic working, you just attach it to the side with some included adhesive andplug it into the mic input on your pc. If you dont want to glue anything to the side of your headphones you could get this boom mic since it justs connect the same way as your old cable. I have this mic myself and it's pretty nice and much cheaper than a modmic. I have blue switches and it doesnt pick up the sound from them.

u/Dallagen · 1 pointr/headphones

This With m50x might work

u/TheJniac · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yes I do, and no it will not. There is a similar product that is compatible, but the Amazon reviews are not stellar. I believe that there is a way to use the Boompro, but it involves adapters and a minor modification to the headphones, so I do not feel it is worthwhile but I am going to mention it for the sake of being thorough.

u/chouetteonair · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Under $100 there's a lot of options from what I've seen. Among open-backed ones (generally better sound, but lacking noise isolation) the commonly backed ones are the Philips SHP9500s, Sennheiser 5x8 series on sale (I personally use the 558, great value), Audio-Technica AD500X (mind the wings, some people like or dislike them), etc.

Obligatory /r/headphones plug. But the SHP and 5x8 are both compatible with some boom mic cables as well for about $30 extra (V-Moda BoomPro and generic for the SHP/5x8 respectively).

EDIT: Besides some comfort complaints (can be modded to a degree), it looks like people enjoy the 668B though. If you're strapped for cash go for it.

u/SbM_Yggdrassil · 1 pointr/Gaming_Headsets

Thanks for your comments.

I get the feeling that Astro headsets are streamerbait.

I'd been interested to try Hyper X as I'd heard good things, but I was really persuaded by your idea of external mic.

The CB-1 is a little tricky to get in Australia. I've found that I might be able to get the Audio Technica ATH-M40x for a similar price. They are apparently a similar, possibly higher quality beast according to one thing I read.

What are your thoughts on that as a substitute?

Edit: Read your stickied thread and I saw you had the M40x listed as "Full recommendation". Is it boompro compatible??

Edit2: Looks like no. Mods required.

Edit3: relevant thread for posterity.

Edit4: A mic that might work with it, but seems like its crap quality. Link

u/The_Roptor · 1 pointr/halo

Maybe that can be a future upgrade for me, I've seen this from Canadian retailers such as Amazon.ca though I didn't realize that it was HD 598 compatible. I wouldn't expect the mic quality to live up to the BoomPro.

I'm looking to get a headset for ps4. From research I think I've decided on

[Audio-Technica ATH-M40x] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YKB8ZU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_urHEzb21CD1VT)

and

Is there anything else I'm missing? I think I need a Y splitter(?) but I'm posting here to confirm if I do or not and if I'm missing anything else.

I also wanted to know if anyone had a better headphone/mic combo for $100 or less.

Thanks for the help!

u/username1615 · 1 pointr/AVexchange

I've got a mic 2.5mm to 3.5mm that can be used with the Senneheiser HD5-- line and the Audio Technica M--x line or any other headphone or input with a 2.5mm female port. Here are the amazon pages for each:

Microphone cable

1.5m cable

The 1.5m cable is brand new. The mic has been used a couple times, but it's in perfect working condition. $20 for both.

u/the_abortionat0r · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Its a decent price performance spot. That said if you arent afraid of used there are a few HD 558s on amazon for about the same price. Those would be out the SHP9500 any day. And there are lock in mic cords for the HD 558.

u/veni_vidi_vale · 1 pointr/headphones

OP see rule 4

please remove evrything in your amazon link after "https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Universal-Sennheiser-Audio-Technica-150CM-Black/dp/B01IRCRCL2" and I'll reinstate your post.

I would want to use a cord with a microphone attachment on it for gaming at home. I can't seem to find connector information, do you know if this cord would work?
