actually, he has these:

they sound good, but not for that price. you can get equal or better sound for about half of that.

I did get new pairs. And they broke in a week. After a certain point they stop replacing them.

Read the one star reviews on how horribly bad they were, build quality wise.

  • Budget: $300-$500

  • Source: Currently using my regular Android 4.1.2 LG Optimus G phone -> Bose whatever cans. Considering Fiio X1/3 as upgraded source.

  • Requirements for Isolation: Pretty severe, unfortunately. I'm buying these for use in the office, which is where I do the majority of my listening now. It's a standard cube farm, but since my floor is relatively empty, it's extremely quiet. i.e., Can hear people nearby typing, clicking mice. I do play my Bose pretty loud and have never had any complaints, but I don't think they have too much of an issue with sound leakage.

  • Preferred Type: Around-the-ear, closed (need minimal sound leakage).

  • Preferred Tone: I'm not too sure, to be honest. I don't think I have enough experience to have a preference here. I feel like I should prefer a relatively neutral headphone, maybe with a slight emphasis on the bass and mid. I don't think I would want anything especially bright, but I don't know. I might have an opportunity to demo some Audeze/etc. at a shop in town, though, so that might be a good point of reference if I need to develop a tone preference.

  • Past Headphones: I had a pair of ATH-M30s in high school and college, which where my first pair of "real" headphones (i.e., not the cheapest possible earbuds), and I really enjoyed them. Unfortunately, I lost my M30s and my parents bought me a pair of Bose TriPath for Christmas, which are both cheap and poorly rated. Not that I really have too much of a problem with the Bose--the certainly meet my needs and are better than stock earbuds or whatever. However I did notice a significant difference between these and my M30s when I first got them, so even though I've adjusted to them now, I assume they're pretty much garbage cans given that the M30s weren't really high-end.

  • Preferred Music: I enjoy pretty much every genre of music. The ones I listen to most are probably electronica/trip-hop (i.e., Emancipator, FlyLo), jazz (i.e., big Miles fan), rap and hip-hop (i.e., Gang Starr forever), lots of indie rock (i.e., NMH, Sonic Youth, early Weezer, Titus Androinicus, etc. etc.), classical (i.e., lots of Beethoven, some other), all sorts of weird metal (i.e., Boris, deafheaven, Om, etc.), ska (i.e., Streetlight, my first love), and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

I'm looking to optimize my audio quality and enjoyment.

Based on feedback in another thread, I've tentatively settled on:

  • Replacing my Optimus G with Fiio X1 as source.

  • Schiit Magni 2 for an amp.

  • Mad Dogs

Eventually, I'll probably buy a Modi 2 for a complete M/M stack, unless the consensus is that it's unnecessary with the X1. I'll also probably consider upgrading my Mad Dogs to the Alpha Dogs, though I'd probably want to audition them first.

What I'd love from this thread is second opinions on this proposed setup. Is the Magni -> Mad Dog my best choice? Are there any other closed headphones I should consider? Is the X3 so superior to the X1 that I should spend the extra money? Is there anything else I need to consider?

As one final tangent, would this style of headphone stand damage the Mad Dogs/other headphones in any way? It looks cool as hell, but I'm worried that it might distort the pads or headband or something. Is there an optimal choice for headphone stand? How necessary is a stand?

Thanks in advance, guys. r/headphones is perhaps the most helpful sub I've ever found!
