Not an endorsement. Try it out and let me know if it's any good.

I'd shun technology, personally. http://beardtrimandgroom.com/how-to-trim-your-beard-with-scissors/

I once bought a pair of mechanical trimmers at a garage sale from a really old dude, these can be found on ebay (vintage status), or new. I've never used it, but figured it would be useful at some point in life...

I've got a pretty thick fast growing beard, and I keep it groomed with just scissors until I want to shorten it, then I use clippers.

You're gonna want to use a special built tool for what you want. DEs and razors are designed for shaving, not clipping.

If you're not into electric clippers you could try the mechanical version. This is what they had before electric clippers back in the day.

For that scruffy grizzly samurai look.

Edit: Note that I have absolutely no idea about how those work or what brands are good. Just picked the first Amazon link as an example.

These are actually basically the same as a modern electric trimmer. The only difference is that they are spring loaded and you use a scissoring motion to operate the clippers instead of having an electric motor move the trimmer head back and forth.

You can actually still buy clipper like these today, they are still being manufactured.

There are a few on amazon but reviews tend to be not great.

Damn that’s some cradle robbing shit going on there!! No wonder so many girls are reincarnated with daddy issues. Anyways.

Weighted mid fade. Tools were without motors. Hand driven clippers so blending from clippers to shears was shoddy, that’s why heavy weight lines were probably popular. these clippers were most likely used, manual hand clippers.

You can still obtain that look. Google shorem haircuts and you’ll be pleasantly surprised :) then take those photos to your nearest hipster barbershop and pray you get a legit barber that doesn’t just shop the look.
