The two versions are:

  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

So yes there's the older one with no number, and the newer one with a "II".

If in doubt, you can tell them apart at a glance based on the appearance of the zoom ring. The older version has ridges that run perpendicular to the lens' long axis (so it looks different from the focusing ring), whereas the newer version has parallel ridges (identical to the focusing ring). This is because to zoom the older one, you have to slide it toward you or away from you like an old looking glass you'd see in a pirate movie, whereas the newer one has a more usual ring that rotates around the lens. So the ridges are oriented to improve grip in the direction in which you have to move the lens.

And of course the price is a dead giveaway, the older one is much cheaper.

Thank you for the insight! I'm getting errors on your links now, though. What do you think of this? Used is around 700.

Easy. The Airshow Lens.

(Used it goes for under the $1600 limit)

Well, first I'll say that the one I have is the first version, as opposed to the second lighter and probably sharper version.

I do like it a lot but I use it at the full 400 focal length 99% of the time and so I wonder if I would have been better off just buying a 400 prime. I also wish I had waited a little bit to get the lighter version. All that said, I've gotten a good amount of great shots with it and I do wildlife photography pretty much exclusively, though I'm no pro by any stretch.

Yeah, the 100-400mmL is indeed glorious...
