I would suggest some of these: analog/digital solar-atomic AWGM100, digital solar-atomic GW-6900, solar with compass/thermo G-9300 Mudman, or a digital solar with neg. display GR-8900A. All of them have solar charging. Some of the first options sync with the atomic time signal and do not have to be set (if in range of the signal). They are all classic black and are fairly large. Should be able to take any kind of abuse they can throw at it. I hope this helps. If not, you may check out he WUS forum for g-shocks.

Personally I like the AWGM100

What does the top semicircle digital window on your watch do? I have a very similar G-shock that looks identical except for the lack of that one window.

I'm looking, and not seeing any seiko solars or citizen eco drives for $100. They all seem to be in the $140 to $210 range. I might still go for one, though, but if you knew where to get them cheaper, that would be cool.

And btw, the G Shock I'm looking at is analog.

Edit: also I think the MDV-106 you mentioned is a Casio, not a Citizen. :-) I was looking at that one, but reviews say the crystal is easily scratchable and not recessed behind the crown.

Check out the Guard Dog company, they make a few belt watches designed for tradesmen, and have a lifetime warranty. About $60. Nothing pretty, but they're built for durability. And they don't flop around like a carabiner watch.

If you could be persuaded to look at wristwatches, I like this Casio . You can beat the shit out of it, and it never needs a battery, and never needs to be set. It's not an attractive watch by any means but it will be difficult to kill.

The AWGM100-1ACR has everything but the temp and compass for $100. I got one for doing construction work around the house, and so far it's worked out well. Uglier than sin, but does the job well.

Thing is, they already have G-Shocks that do a lot of that stuff for way under $1000. I should know, [I own one]

Mine does the atomic calibration and is solar charged. Doesn't have GPS, but does have 29 time zones included.

Doesn't have a sapphire glass, but the mineral glass it does have is still good for 200m, same as the 1k watch.

Plastic band is pretty reasonably strong too, as strong as any regular G-Shock. Not hang-yourself-off-it-strong, but unless you get snagged by a piece of macherinery, it ain't coming off.

That's not to say this isn't a beautiful G-Shock, but this isn't for someone who "who abuse the shit out of themselves and their gear and want something that will work under any circumstances". Much cheaper G-Shocks exist that do exactly that. This is for someone with all the above, and who wants a really unique, high-end sports watch.

I have had that watch (not the exact one, but the same model as mine is 8 years old) for 8 years. Thing is a tank. It will work at all times but it doesnt look great. It is very light though.

If you want something more classy but still solar. It is still a tough watch, but will show its wear much more than the G-shock. It is also a little heavy with the metal band. I do reccomend a military green or black perlon band for it.

Everybody seems to be recommending eco-drive watches here, and they aren't wrong, but I have two eco-drives and see no benefit in them over the watches I have listed. Especially no benefit that would justify the $75-200 price premium.

These are slightly out of your price range, but worth it in looks and technology. AWGM-100-1AC or AWGM-100b-1AC. There is also the AW590-1A.
These are all smaller G-Shock watches, but they wear very comfortably.

Personally, I like the bigger models because of their rugged masculine looks on my wrist (I have a 7.5" wrist). If you have a large wrist, you might also consider saving up for a GA-1000.
