DW-5600E is the basic (but still great!) no frills square.
Tells the time, has alarms and stop watches, counts up and down, an auto backlight, and calendar to 2039. It's dive rated to 200 meters, and has an electronic luminescent backlight, much like indiglo if you have a Timex.

GWM-5610 is all of the above, along with world time, and has the two biggest features for some: solar charging and atomic radio syncing.
For many, this is the THE "square." It's robust, self sufficient, and has a classic look without looking too dated or too ultra modern. The display is slightly different than the 5600E.

GLX-5600 is most similar to the budget 5600E above but has an additional bit of display for tide and moon information. Still as tough, still as cool looking.

GLS-5600 is a more recent, stylish variant of the 5600E. It come in 4 neat colors (black, white, green, and sand) and features a moving seconds complication on the face. Also, it features a "Low Temp LCD," this LCD is rated to go to -20 C. Honestly as you're wearing it on your person, a normal 5600E can go pretty cold as it also has your body heat. Possibly most importantly for some people, this model comes standard with strap adapters and a really comfy clothes NATO strap standard.

GWM-5610-1BJF is the Japanese only, blacked out model of the radio/solar 5610. These can be imported pretty easily through Amazon, so of cost isn't an issue, don't let the import bother you. The Japanese models also usually feature slightly more supple, softer resin straps and a screwback case, like on a mechanical time piece.

While not exclusively a 5600, if you need a big honkin' watch, the GX-56 is basically a thick 5600. Huge buttons and case, has all of the features of a 5610 with a cool moving seconds graphic like the GLS.

Many of these can be found in various colors and feature variants, so as a recap/guide:

5600 - standard square G Shock

5610 - radio/solar square model

GLX - surfing/tide model

GLS - stylish colors, comes with NATO strap

GX-56 - huge "King" G Shock

BB after model number - blacked out model

JF after model number - Japan import

Hopefully this helped. I had a lot of fun making this.

The CASIO G SHOCK DW 5610 BJF , needed a beater for everyday work/exercise so ended up buying this beauty. Old skool retro cool. With 10 month power reserve, atomic technology and super durable what more can you ask for in a beater.
I know people say negative display is harder to read, but I haven't really had much issue with it. It is true the screen can be quite dark at times but the crispness of the LCD screen still makes the numbers clear and pronounced. Been a week now and am very happy with the purchase.

EDIT: This is in fact the GW 5610 1BJF model. If you are interested in getting yourself a beater watch such as this I got mine on Amazon and there were no dramas with it, speedy delivery.

What about the GW5610? I love it - it looks great on my 6.75" wrist.

Two versions (I have both):

Great watch. I have the white version of this.

I'm a fan of the negative display.

Here you go.

Looks like a g-shock 5600 of some variety. I'm currently wearing my GW-M5610-1BJF (https://www.amazon.com/Casio-GW-M5610-1BJF-G-Shock-Solar-Digital/dp/B009S13XJC/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1474668089&sr=8-10&keywords=g+shock+5600) and absolutely love mine and wear it daily.

u/hydraulx · 2 pointsr/EDC

It's pretty much an armored F-91W with a multi-function alarm, countdown timer, and more water resistance.

If you like that style and want more features, check out some of the different GW-5600 models that also have solar or wave ceptor to sync to atomic clock time signals.

My favorite is probably the GW-M5610 that has the inverse display.

I get all my Gshocks on Amazon. Not sure how good amazon is in the UK though.
There's the normal 5610 with the red stripe around it,

A negative display 5610 (I'd stay away from negative display watches as the legibility is less than perfect at lower light levels)

A blue tinted one

And a green tinted one that I cant find the link to but it's probably not readily available.

Ah, I was wondering (saw the ...10-1BJF on the tag). So it's this one on Amazon Prime that I can get in 2-days? Does the date actually look like it does on the Amazon page (tiny individual dots) or are they solid numbers like your picture shows?

u/Preston205 · 2 pointsr/Watches

I would go with the G-Shock GW-M5610-1BJF or GA-2100

Here is the Amazon link

I like it a lot. Its the Japanese version and it has a retro style, which is why it so much more expensive than the other atomic clock versions. I have been wearing it everyday for 2 years now.

u/zeroair · 1 pointr/gshock

For comparison, here's the same watch on amazon. At the current massdrop price, it's not a deal (with 7.50 shipping). At the lowest price, probably an ok deal if you were already going to buy this exact watch.

Normal Square, smaller than a King. I love this size, I prefer it to the bigger ones.

Navy Seals:

The Best G-Shock Military Watches Under $100

It’s no secret that Casio G-Shock watches are very popular with service members. For under $100 it’s the best military watch that can stand up to the most demanding use and the harshest environments.

Military Dress Codes:

While certain units may have their own dress codes, there aren’t any strict regulations on wearing watches in the military other than to keep it simple and conservative. Regarding jewelry in Army Regulation 670–1, the U.S. Army states “Soldiers may wear a wristwatch … with Army uniforms, unless prohibited by the commander for safety or health reasons,” and goes on to say “Any jewelry or monitors worn by Soldiers while in uniform or in civilian clothes on duty must be conservative.”

2201 of the U.S. Navy’s Uniform Regulations states “Wristwatch / Bracelets. While in uniform, only one of each may be worn.”

In AFI 36-2903, the U.S. Air Force is more specific on what constitutes a conservative watch and says, “Conservative examples (not all inclusive) are solid color black, brown, silver or gold. Prohibited examples are diamond-covered, neon, bright colors, and bands that exceed 1-inch width..”

The U.S. Marines Corps Uniform Regulations state “Inconspicuous watches are authorized for wear in uniform.”

Based on these regulations we can be safe to assume that any dark, solid-color G-Shock watch is acceptable for military use in any branch.

While any G-Shock model can handle the rigors of military life, we’ve chosen the following watches for their conservative styling, low prices, features/usability, and battery life. We’ve left out the pricier Master of G and aviation models which could also be good military watches and are sticking to the basics for those who just need a reliable timepiece to use in the field with basic features like a stopwatch and countdown timer.

Tough Solar G-Shock Watches: One major decision to make when buying a G-Shock is whether to buy a watch that has the Tough Solar feature. With Tough Solar watches, the battery can last up to 9-10 months after a full charge, and the battery will continue to recharge whenever exposed to light, so a dying battery is not a concern. The rechargeable battery is expected to last for many years (in many cases beyond 10) and will generally outlast a normal battery. So a Tough Solar watch is a good choice if you expect to be somewhere remote for a while where you can’t change the battery. We usually prefer Tough Solar watches, but also keep in mind that the regular batteries tend to last a lot longer than their estimated life if you don’t use the backlight a lot.

Standard G-Shock Features: All the following watches have the G-Shock standard features: shock resistance, water resistance up to 200 meters, 12 or 24 hour formats, and an electro-luminescent backlight or LED light. Unless otherwise noted, they also feature world time, auto calender, 4 daily alarms including 1 snooze alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer, and button tone on/off setting. All selections have a a resin band for easy adjustment and maximum comfort.

THE BEST G-SHOCK MILITARY WATCHES UNDER $100

Note: Prices may have fluctuated from the time of publication and some watches may currently be over $100. Also models might be priced higher than $100 on international Amazon sites.

G-SHOCK G100-1BV

The G100-1BV adheres to the military’s K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) principle for those who prefer a no-nonsense watch with analog hands. The time or date is also shown on a small digital display and the watch features magnetic resistance, 1 daily alarm, stopwatch, and auto calender. The battery is rated for 3 years.

PROS: Simple design, easy to see analog style
CONS: No countdown timer, no world time, adjusting the time can take a while

G-SHOCK GWM530A-1

The GWM530A-1 is one of the sleeker looking G-Shocks with a relatively low profile and has Multi-Band 6 capability for automatic time syncing via radio signals from transmitting stations in the US, UK, Germany, Japan (2), and China. A distinct advantage of this watch is that the digits on the LCD display are very large compared to other G-Shocks.

PROS: Large display, solar charging, Multi-Band 6
CONS: The design style is not as distinctive compared to other G-Shocks

G-SHOCK GW6900-1

The simple and confident looking GW6900-1 has an easily accessible EL backlight button on the front of the case which makes it a good choice for those operating in the dark. The DW6900-1V is a more affordable option with the same case but it lacks Tough Solar charging, Multi-Band 6, and world time. The GW6900 descends from the DW6600 which was the first G-Shock with the EL backlight and was issued to Navy SEALS.

One like this will give off very little light at night due to reverse display, and, looks good with uniform:

This. While it might be too cheap, the GWM5610 is a great one. Solar, atomic, and very beatable. If OP wants to needlessly spend more, he can get the inverted display version.
